Are getting the right 4 Cs, being eye clean, and sparkle all that matter? Or does the Certification matter too?

I would say that getting the diamond right is what matters, and the certification just makes it easier to do that, but I''m sure there are a handful of women/men out there who live by the letters and numbers on the paper.

Without a GIA or AGS report you don't know what the 4 Cs really are.

Other labs have loosie goosie grading, so those stones are no bargain at all.

Thanks Kenny and Yssie. The more I read on PS, the more I''m understanding the value of the cert.

My BF and I bought a loose diamond last week, but it was EGL Israel (color E, clarity SI1, cut ideal). But now, I''m seeing that it might not be as good as we thought. I''m planning to cancel that loose diamond and start over, looking for a GIA cert.

Is that a good idea?

Ditto this.

And if you''re shopping in local stores near you, be advised that some stores claim they do their own in-house grading, and may show you little plastic cards with a photo of the diamond, the size, color, clarity, and nothing about the cut. These are not certifications from labs like GIA or AGS or EGL, despite what the stores may tell you. Lots of local stores in my area do this.

Frankly, since you''ve become aware grading reports matter...especially if looking for a round, a report from AGS will increase the likelihood of the sparkly quotient, too.
