To get a square look in a cushion you generally want a ratio of no more than 1:1.05. I just bought a 1.09 ratio cushion and it looks almost square - ever so slightly elongated. So I think a 1.07 is going to appear pretty square. As to the rest of the stone''s appearance, you don''t have to go very far in researching cushions here on PS to learn that cushions need to be seen to be judged. And you will also be directed to Jon at GOG and Mark at ERD as guys who can really pick ''em.

Can you get pics? Can you post the cert? Would be helpful to see the pavillion facet pattern.

Also, here''s a fun tool that Jonathan at GOG showed me...you can see what "shape" the l/w ratio will produce:

So the specifications that I provided above are incorrect. Attached is the Cert. Let me know what you think.

And here is a picture. Btw, this diamond is from ERD and I have spoken with Mark regarding this diamond. He says that it is a beautiful diamond and talked with me about my concerns. I am a little concerned with the symmetry and polish only being good, and also with the small cutlet. He did say that you cannot notice the cutlet as it is very small, but zoomed in you can notice it. Let me know what you all think. Thanks!!!

I lightened it up a bit, and resized. I don''t think the culet would bother you in real life, these pics are huge! Also, good on sym and pol is not unusual in fancies, no right or wrong. It''s just a matter of if you like the stones look.

Ok, I have found yet one more diamond. This one is at my local jeweler in which my family has used for years and is the place which has the setting. All I know as of now is the following-

Cushion - Modified Brilliant
2.03 Ct
H Color
Square shape
Very Good Symmetry
Very Good Polish
No Cutlet

They are quoting me around 17000 for the diamond. Is this a good price? From what I can tell, it is a little high, which I would expect to pay a little bit more from a local jeweler, but I dont want to pay a lot more. These square cushions seem hard to come by.

Also, does anyone have an opinion of Modified Brilliant vs Brilliant, does this really impact the cost, or is it more of a personal preference?

Thanks again

You can do a search to compare prices above, as you say jewellers can be a bit more expensive. The one in the photo looks pretty, as to the one with the jeweller it is hard for us to advise without photos or other images. I wonder if you might have time or be open to ordering an ASET scope if you plan to view some diamonds in person? This would be a big help to you.

This looks very pretty to me, but what matters is that you fall in love with it.

I like the first one :) I think it GORGEOUS!!!! I doubt you see the culet during normal viewing and Mark is GREAT at picking wonderful cushions. I prefer the non-modified cushions because I like the chunkier facets rather than the tiny ones that can look like crushed ice, however there are some modifieds that don't look like crushed ice so I guess you just have to see it in person. Also, modifieds usually cost a little less. Just my .02 :)

ETA: Oh, and it does look VERY square :)

Alright, I have finally seen the diamonds at my local family jeweler in person. There are two of them and they both look really good.

#1 - GIA Cert
Cushion - Modified Brilliant
2.03 ct
H Color
SI1
Very Good Polish
Good Symmetry
1.03 ratio
69% table
65% depth

#2 - GIA Cert
Cushion - Modified Brilliant
2.20 ct
I Color
SI1
Very Good Polish
Good Symmetry
1.02 ratio
64% table
65% depth

Both of these look great, and I personally could not tell a difference in color. I put them under a magnification and still could not tell the difference in color. There are more inclusions in #2, just smaller and spread apart, but #1 has a larger crystal inside, but not near as many inclusions. Both are still rated at SI1. But from the top, without the magnification, you cannot see inclusions in either.

My question is which one should I get, will the 2.2 be to big, and even though I cant see the color difference, should I go with the H? My girlfriend has a 5 1/2 ring size with long fingers. I got the opinion from the jeweler (not the diamond specialist) who at the time did not know the colors, or anything, just by look, chose the larger diamond. She also could not tell a difference in the color.

Both diamonds are the same price, I believe they will each be about $15,500. Depending on the site I look at, this seems to be a fair price, not great, but not ripping me off either.

Thanks again for your thoughts!!!
