My girlfriend likes the convenience of being able to have her ring cleaned/serviced at Jared's and liked the warranty that they offer on their diamonds. Looking at Jared's diamond selection it is just extremely higher priced than online such as Blue Nile. I figure I would add a rider to the insurance plan (AllState) anyway, so wouldn't Jared's diamond warranty be redundant anyway? I have a fairly good budget on this, but I still want to get the best bang for my buck. Does anyone have any insight into whether or not this is a good plan?

Summary:
Purchase a diamond similar to this one: http://www.bluenile.com/build-your-own-diamond-ring?elem=sub2&forceStep=DIAMONDS_STEP&track=rotator1#diamonds_forceStep=DIAMONDS_STEP|builder=BYOR|pid=LD03975435
Purchase a setting and have the diamond mounted at Jared's
Purchase the Jared Extended Service Plan
Attach a rider to my renter's policy

Putting the ring on the HO policy is a good idea. Usually pretty cheap, especially if you take a big deductible. Just check the exclusions and whether it offers worldwide coverage. Insure it for the purchase price, not the bogus appraisal.

As for cleaning and servicing, you can clean it on your own with a mild detergent, and if the stone ever becomes loose in the setting, any jeweler can fix it for $20.

Buying from a bricks-and-mortar retailer is a guaranteed way to get ripped-off. Just have the online vendor do it all.

Having your ring serviced really. You can stop in any jewelry store to have the prongs checked and if she really wants it cleaned you can splurge for $20 to buy a sonic cleaner otherwise, dish washing detergent with tooth brush has worked on my 3.66 GIA H si1 stone for 30 years. lol

No seriously the chain stores are not the place to get your stone. They don't have the ideal cut stones that will knock her socks off. Regarding insurance, you get a rider on your home owners or a small policy for the ring. or us your Americann Express. Department stores come and go and the Jared and Kay jewelery of the world have their place but not for a "IDeal " diamond

You have come to the right place. The Ps community will help guide you through this process. Take a look at Brian Gavin, White Flash, James Allen and Good old Gold......Brian Gavin even tells you if the diamond is eye clean

You are looking for ideal cut ...Let us know the shape and budget range and we will help you find the perfect sone

Thanks for the quick response. We are looking for a round cut and I am looking for a stone under 12k. We talked and she doesn't mid a small speck (as long as it doesnt affect brightness) if it gets her a little bigger size. I'm probably the one is more concerned about it being eye clean.

I put a diamond on hold at Blue Nile that is AIG cert:

Stock number: LD03975435
Price: $11,760
Price per carat: $7,350
Carat weight: 1.60
Cut: Ideal
Color: E
Clarity: SI1
Depth %: 61.3%
Table %: 55%
Polish: Excellent
Symmetry: Excellent
Girdle: Thin to Medium
Culet: None
Fluorescence: Strong
Measurements: 7.57 x 7.55 x 4.63 mm

How does this diamond look to you?

Are you OK with an E-color with strong fluorescence? Some people advise strongly against such a stone.

I have been reading a good amount of information the last few days and most seem to indicate florescence isn't a big factor and is a good way to get at a slightly better value. However, I just did a quick search and some suggest that the strong fluorescence especially on the more colorless scale can create a oily or murky effect. Anyone experience with this?

Again, thank you all so much for the quick responses.

Fluorescence is an amazing phenomenon.

I prefer all of my stones to have it.

I specifically seek out fluor stones as:
1. You can get a better stone without sacrificing any of the C's
2. Fluor sometimes allows a stone to face-up whiter, in certain circumstances (sunlight, lights with UV component)
3. Putting a stone with fluor under a blacklight and seeing it light up a dark room is an extremely cool and unique scientific phenomenon

Historically, stones with fluor have sold at a PREMIUM, but there is a negative stigma attached in the current environment (many articles about this subject), which very well may change in our lifetimes.

There are EXTREMELY rare cases where fluor causes a negative hazy/oily effect. In those rare cases, it is fairly obvious, so if you have a vendor that can inspect a stone for you, you can completely avoid any possible issues like this.

My advice - find a vendor that can inspect the stone for you, find a stone with fluor from this vendor, save $$$

There is no consensus on this...

http://www.diamonds.pro/truth-about/diamond-fluorescence/

I bought an E-color last week and decided against stones with fluorescence. It's too much of a wild card for me when buying colorless stones without seeing them.

After reading the information on that site and speaking with a guy at blue nile for quite a bit I think I find the fluorescence kind of interesting. What do you think about the rest of the diamond and the price?

You expect a salesman to give you an honest answer? Salesmen, even if non-commissioned, are the worst possible source of information about buying a diamond. They say whatever they need to to sell their stuff. I'm quite tempted to do the opposite of what they say. I don't do business with BN due to lack of photos, so I can't give opinions on their stuff.

If you want a diamond with flourescense, try the Blue line at briangavindiamonds.com

Some salesmen, yes. PS recommended vendors -- no. I've bought a few things from BN and found their reps to be honest with me (albeit with limitations due to lack of information as they are drop shippers).

ETA: I'm not trying to imply that BN is a PS recc'd vendor (they aren't). I would trust many of the recommended vendors here to give me accurate information, and in addition to that, I have personally found BN to be honest with me. Just to clarify.
