so my mom wants to purchase a pair of diamond earrings for me as a wedding gift. i know nothing about diamonds and wouldnt know how to pick out a good pair for a diamond studs. any help / information would be helpful.
i found two stones - ideal cut - HSI1 and GSI1 both .59CT. i can see a lot of ''''fire'''' in the stone. the diamonds are both eye clean. so for $2500 would this be an ok deal? that also include the cost for the mounting and setting which will be a 4 prong martini setting.

A few questions:

1. Any certs on the stones?
2. What are all the numbers on the certs?
Physical dimensions of both stones
Depth %
Table %
Crown %
Pavilion %
Polish & Symmetry grades

They are both EGL. Seeing that they just earrings I didn''t want to spend that extra money for a GIA cert. I don''t have the number off hand. I guess I''m just looking to see what quality I should look for when buying diamonds for earrings. EX: cut over clarity? Or color over cut.

I don''t plan to sell these diamonds since they will be from my mom

For earrings I would make sure that they are extremely well cut because you want major sparkles to stand out at your ears. The natural body oils and dirt "cloud" the earring diamond's sparkle a lot sooner than an e-ring, and a well cut diamond will shine through grime MUCH better than an average cut stone.

I'd go cut over EVERYTHING. For earrings, if well cut, you can go down as low as J and still look white. SI1 and SI2 is also fine for clarity since earrings aren't scrutinized as closely as engagement rings.

yep. no one will ever be close enough to your ears to scrutinize color/clarity. what they will notice, from across the room, is SPARKLE. get a great cut and don''t worry so much about color/clarity.

Yup, I agree- cut, cut, cut. The sparkle is what makes the diamonds stand out. My studs are 1.03ct total and they look larger to me since they sparkle.

What a wonderful gift from your mom.

Are you getting them before you wedding so you can wear them on your wedding day?
