Diamond Earrings-are they Mine Cut or European Cut?

Hi everyone,
My husband purchased these earrings for me because he knows I like the idea of antique jewelry. What I didn't notice right
away is that they are not round. I read that old mine diamonds are not really round. They look like there are sides to the diamond, but they are set in a 3 prong setting, which makes them look odd to me. Maybe these are old mine and not European? I appreciate any thoughts you may have.

The one on the left could be an old mine cut or a cushion cut...the one on the right looks much rounder but the photos are not
up close enough to really tell.

A little hard to tell what the exact cut is, but could both be old mine cuts--they just don't look well matched in terms of outline or pattern. Do you like them?

It sure does look like one is a cushion cut diamond shape and the other is a round shape.

It's a little hard to tell from the pics (need to be closer and head on) but the one on the left looks like it may be an Mine Cut. I wonder if you had them set in 4 6 or 8 prong settings is you could mitigate the unevenness of the left one with extra prongs....

After looking at them again- one is definitely more "square" shaped than the other. The other is not perfectly round either.
I took two more pictures, maybe it shows better. My pictures are not very good and I can't seem to photograph more magnified. The setting seems to throw off my visual of the diamond shape. They are very white and sparkly which is nice.

I think both are Old Mine.

Would a bezel set hide some of the discrepancy, I wonder??? Maybe someone who knows more can chime in.

I'm starting to think they are both cushions in the wrong settings. I don't know. They look pretty. Do you like them?

I do like the diamonds, they are very white and sparkly in person. I don't like the setting they are in at all though. The diamonds are a decent size - about 5.5 mm. I would definitely need to change the setting. I love the milgrain bezel look that I've seen studs set in. I am not sure how that would work since the diamonds aren't really round.

I think the martini (3 prong) settings are not good for these shapes. Either 4 prong with prongs near each corner, or possibly bezels--but bezels may emphasize the different shapes.

Thank you so much - I love the ideas you gave me about new mountings for the earrings!

That is so wonderful that your husband got you such a nice gift. They really are very beautiful diamonds. Sadly the current setting does not do them justice. Perhaps a setting like this will help create a unified outline for the diamonds, especially since one is more rounded than the other, http://www.jewelsbygrace.com/custom-work/1-21-ctw-old-european-cut-octagon-dangle-earrings-in-rose-gold#.WKOrMYWcFv0 . Or perhaps something more square, like Quaddio's diamond...

What a great idea. I wish I had thought to say that. I think a squarish setting will definitely minimize the shape difference so your earrings show more symmetry. You have very pretty, nice size stones and these shape settings should make you feel that they are more balanced. Please let us know what you decide to do.

Would everyone think that the square setting to place the earrings is a custom order only? I would like them to be post style earrings and not a dangle. I would also love to get milgrain in it somewhere also. I don't want to lose the sparkle of the earring in the wrong kind of setting.
I appreciate you taking the time to read my questions and the responses that I have received

Gorgeous OMCs!

I suggest contacting Erica of Love Affair Diamonds to talk about options. She has a great bench jeweler who does lovely antique style settings. I'm sure she could show you some options. She has many examples of old mine earrings on her site, I suggest you take a look (any of these could be designed as posts):

http://www.loveaffairdiamonds.com/georgian-era-pastes-in-reproduction-bezel-earrings-rose-gold-plated/ (add milgrain on the bezels?)

She would likely have other ideas. If you wanted a more simple 4 prong setting, I'm sure she could show you some options. I don't think these would need to be custom unless the stones are totally different sizes (but doesn't appear that way in photos). A good bench jeweler can make minor adjustments to stock settings, too.

Something like these options could be really lovely (milgrain could possibly be added):

Paisley, the earrings I linked to in my previous post are by Jewels by Grace. I found them in her "Custom Work" section. She could probably make them for you in any shape and style you like. It might be worth asking about.

Thank you all for your links and suggestions! I will do some research and contact vendors for their selection of mountings.
