Hello, my husband has graciously agreed to buy me diamond earrings for my 40 bday/having twins this year. I am thinking I want around 3-4 ctw and have a budget of around $25K. Any suggestions of where and what stones to buy? I like round and am intrigued by the ascher cut. I live near San Francisco and have access to the jewelry mart. Are internet prices as good? Thanks in advance to those who help! Anne

Avpg,

Despite your locale...I''m hoping you''re also taking advantage of the "locale" of your post on this page...and a nearby thread.

Fancies can be challenging to judge for performance...Storm on this board is among our most discerning judges...and he''ll defer to Jon at GOG. G0G also happens to run a business that sells these.

A good place to start, no matter where you live.

Wow - what a lot to celebrate! Congrats on turning 40 and on your impending twins!

Your budget would likely allow you to possibly get around the 3 cwt mark in well-cut rounds, so I think you''re on target.
Matching asschers in that size might be a bit more of a challenge to find.

Wow, congrats; totally nice size. I would check with Good Old Gold or Whiteflash or both to see what they can come up w/in your budget.

I bet Storm will chime in; he loves Asschers, they are beautiful stones!!!

for asschers
Jon at www.goodoldgold.com
Todd at www.niceice.com

For rounds any of the PS vendors.

You really need to look around and decide on a shape before we can help you out a lot.
Look thru the pictures in show me the ring that will help decide.

almost forgot.. congrates on the twins and 40!!!!

Congrats on the twins!!! Yes, internet prices are very good; that is why I bought online. You might want to read about which stones look largest for the size if size is important that may help you with shape of a stone. Up top under helpful threads and size comparison.

Congratulations!! What a good year for you.

Welcome!!! Generally, you get more size and sparkle from rounds than you would any other shape. I have bought from Good Old Gold and WhiteFlash and highly recommend them because of their high quality stones, great trade-in policies, and excellent customer service.

Most of us have a "fear of turning forty" for whatever reason, but you, my dear, have lots to celebrate!! Congratulations!!

You could snap up this Daniel K pair of 2.22tcw asscher studs for about 9K and have quite a bit of budget left over for more F-U-N! Or for a fancier look ... Daniel K pave halo'd Asschers for 19K.

Agree that Asschers can be hard to match ... that's why I thought of these pre-selected Daniel K beauties at bargain prices (IMHO).

ETA: Heck, you could even get matching necklaces!!!!

Wow, what a great gift. I can''t wait to see what you decide to get.

Thanks for all the great feedback. I''ve decided on rounds. What do you experts think I should be looking for as far as cut, color, etc? These are earrings and not a ring, so I''ve heard it''s a little more forgiving for diamond quality.

If you are getting asschers I would keep the clarity still somewhat high since it''s easier to see inclusions in stepcuts, VS1-2 would be fairly safe. I would stay around the F/G range for color. I wanted to chime in with deco''s idea of the closeout daniel k at pearlmans. It''s very difficult to find well-matched and nice asschers and daniel k settings are very well-made. It would be a really easy and beautiful route. Bill at peaslmans is also a very nice guy to work with.

I would say with an ideal cut (and I def. think it's worth it to stick with that), you could look in the H-J range. Just remember, the larger the stone, the easier it is to see some warmth. If you don't mind that, or rather mind that other people might possibly see some, go with the lower end. And anything down to SI2 would be fine, as long as they are eyeclean, and the clarity markers are not affecting the performance.

p.s. You can easily go one color grade difference, possibly two, but at this size, one might be safer.

i.e. An H, and a I. That may allow more choices.

Oh, good! You still want great quality, but you can go a little lower in color and clarity.

Here is a terrific pair:

oops, my bad! You decided on rounds! Since you are getting round diamonds, as DS mentioned you can go a little lower on color/clarity as long as the cut is great. I would say H/SI would be a great sweet spot. I love the pair DS picked out and it should be easier to find a well-matched pair since you are going for rounds.

Okay experts, what do you think of this match from Whiteflash? Their manufacturers say they are eye clean.

Round 2.01 J SI1 EX GIA EX EX N 61.1% 57% 8.11x8.16x4.97 Wire $11,993

Round 2.03 J SI1 EX GIA EX EX N 61.0% 57% 8.16x8.13x4.97 Wire $12,674

So far, they look great!

Can you get us links, or at least IS pics with crown/pavillion angles?

Ditto!! I hope these check out!

I''d much rather have the 1.5 I color pair, personally, because I think the size is better for earrings and I think the color will show less tint. Those J''s probably aren''t WF cut stones, but the numbers look fine.

I would much prefer to have the bigger J's if the cut checks out and they are eyeclean!!

Shame they are not for me

, but it looks like we have some nice contenders going for avpg. I don't think there would be much difference between I and J colour showing any tint, but I guess we will see what avpg prefers, also no chance of the two I's as a pair now as one has sold.

Well, I forget everything is bigger in CA! Girls with 3-5+ ct. e-ring stones probably can handle 2 cts. per ear if their earlobes are large enough. They would not fit on my earlobes which is why I guess I have that opinion!

They are a great match in size and both should be well cut stones. Color and clarity are personal preference, so only you can decide that!
