Hi, This my first time on this site, so I hope I am doing
this right. My daughter has started looking at engagement
rings, so I have been doing some checking into what goes
into getting a really good diamond. I have been to the
GIA website and studied the information there, but the one
question I still have is on the Cut information. I under-
stand that the Table size, Crown angle, Pavilion depth &
angle all go into making a good cut, but everytime you look
up a diamond they give you all of these numbers from the
50 range to the 80''s or 90''s. My question is: is there
a "Best" range for the Cut of a Diamond or is each one
different ? If buying a stone over the Internet is there
some way to know if the stone is well proportioned without
seeing it firsthand, using the numbers given. I realize the
"Make" of the stone is important as well.
My daughter is looking at the Princess cut stones.
Thanks

The "make" IS the cut.

Take a look at www.gemappraisers.com for proportions for better-cut fancies. Be forewarned, though, common thought is that fancies much more than round brilliants need to be seen to be evaluated. In fact, ANY stone needs to be seen (see niceice's thread to that effect). Buy using a set of eyes you trust.

Have fun with it!

Welcome to the forum Frenesi;

Like the man said go to www.gemappraisers.com and click on princess cut and that will give you the numbers you need.
The next very important piece of information is the budget for the diamond. Now go the top of this page, below the A Cut Above banner, and click pricescope and on the left hand side fill out the information on your princess cut and see what turns up. Pick out two or three that look good and pick up the phone or e-mail one of us and we will help you through it.
