The BF and I went ring shopping today! Anyway, I was wondering if anyone has experiences with seeing color in different lighting. When we were at Derco, they had D and G colors in the cut I liked...and I could definitely tell a difference. Would this difference be less noticeable without the high spotlight environment? I think I will go back and ask to see it in different lighting...

The diamond for my engagement ring is a D and I helped my brother with purchasing the diamond for my FSIL. Her diamond is an H. I can definitely see a difference between them in certain lightings but once outside in full sunlight, though there is a difference, it''s not as noticeable when we''re in doors and with dimmer lighting. I noticed the difference more while her diamond was loose and we had it on a white background, but now that it''s set the color of hers look higher than an H. But I am also color sensitive and she is not. In normal conditions though hers is almost just as crisp and white as mine and the difference is barely noticeable. Which one are you leaning towards? Are you color sensitive? That''s my .02. I hope that helps.

thanks for your reply! I think I am color-sensitive...I definitely noticed a difference between the D and the G. I think it might be best to go with E/F to save some money or trade color for size...

If you''re color sensitive then see how you feel about E/F since they would help get you a bigger diamond. Of course don''t sacrifice the cut of the diamond but check what your tolerance on clarity is too. That could help with the cost and staying within your budget. Good luck! I hope you post whatever you end up picking!

I''m curious, were you comparing GIA certed diamonds?

Even so, the color difference between a D and a G is obvious side by side. If you can''t take the tint, stick to an E.

Actually spotlighting results in those sparkly flashes of rainbow colors, which makes body color less noticeable.

Soft diffuse even lighting results in no bright distracting colored flashes, so you can detect body color better.

You will detect body color more by looking into the side of the diamond than you will looking down into the top.

yes, they were GIA certified. When she turned them down on a white piece of paper, I could definitely notice. I think maybe this was altering my perception of how they looked face up...but I thought the G had a slight yellow look to it. Anyway, I think I will go back and try to look with fresh eyes...

and of course I will post pictures when I get the rock :) but may be a while...BF is going to make the final decisions (with much guided input) and surprise me

also the D diamonds had medium blue fluor...not sure about the Gs...this might have also contributed?

Once a diamond in the D-G range is set on a ring, I honestly think 99.9% of people, including me, would be hard pressed to tell the differnece. But yes, look at a stone in different lighting conditions as this affects apparent color.

my diamond''s an i (so definitely down a bit from a g) BUT when i''m outside i see pretty much no color at all.

HOWEVER, once indoors, particularly in fluorescent lighting (like in my classroom), i can see the color.

so, yeah, different types of lighting will affect how color looks (or doesn''t).
