Will a pave halo help hide a higher colored diamond that faces up whiter than it is graded?
For instance, if I were to get an OEC with say K-M color that faced up really white and put it in a pave halo setting. Would the halo help improve/hide the higher color?
I'm not sure I understand. Are you wondering if you place melee next to your OEC, if the melee will appear more 'white' than the center stone thereby making your center stone look much lower in color? If that is what you are asking then yes it's possible. Melee comes in different color ranges though, if you are concerned about contrasting colors then I would ask for lower colored melee. That said, some people really like the contrast between higher colored melee and a lower colored stone. IMO it can help highlight the 'antique-ness' of the OEC.
This is Sarahbears thread. Her gorgeous ring is N/O color I believe and set in a halo with higher colored melee. I think that the contrast is magnificent!
If the center diamond is set in prongs, remember that you still see tint from the side. If you drop the center stone down lower and set it in a bezel, that helps to hide the side view of the diamond, provided the ring is not a floating bezel design. The face-up whiteness can vary with the lighting conditions. The chunky-facet makes don't camouflage body color as well as modern H&a RB make does.
In short, if the center and the melee are very far apart in color, there are going to be times where you see the contract in color. If tint bothers you, then don't drop below a G or H. Possibly an I might work, too, depending on the size of the diamond.
I know there is or was a picture of this ring on PS, from 2008-2009. It belonged to Erica of Jewels by Erica Grace and the setting was made by Singlestone. The diamond was graded M/N, but I'm not sure by whom. I am uploading a copy. You can see the color difference.
You would need to talk to your vendor about expectations. I take it you are trying to make your center stone appear whiter then it is or at least keep the contrast between the center and the halo minimal. With that said if your "M" faces up more like a J/K and you use G/H melee in your halo the contrast will be slight, but you will still notice it probably in certain lighting.
My N/O definitely has a tint in natural sunlight but you don't notice the tint at all in the evening or artifical light. I'm fine either way but I personally LOVE/ ADORE/ OBSESS with lower colored diamonds. I love the old worldly look of them.
A few notes for haloing lower colored diamonds:
- You might want to think about using single cuts vs. full cuts for melee. It seems the concensus with vendors is that they are more mellow and work great with lower colored diamonds or old cuts. Full cut melee are more bright white and sharp. If you ARE looking for contrast I would do full. Otherwise pay the extra and get single.
-I *believe melee diamonds can go all the way down to I/J however I personally would never go below G/H. It seems vendors across the board on PS believe the quality takes a nose dive after H. A few non PS vendors and my local ones recommended I/J to keep the costs down but they looked weird and grey to me in RL. I would definitely pass on lower cut melee.
