Why does diamond color grading go from D-Z and not A-Z??

I must confess.
Actually I'm not.
I just googled your question and DF's thread came right up.
Of course John Pollard knew the answer. ;))

Interesting thread. Thanks, Kenny. I thought I read somewhere that D was chosen to allow the possibility for even more colorless diamonds to be found at some point in the future. So, for example, if a stone was unearthed that was far whiter than any current D, there would be an available letter for it.

Incidentally, is diamond color still graded by the human eye? I think I saw a 'colorimeter'? used for grading diamond color. That would take human error out of the equation.
