I have read that if you have a low colored diamond, you should set it in yellow gold because it will hide the low color.

I have also read that if you have a low colored diamond, you should set it in white gold, because if you set it in yellow you'll get the reflection of yellow into the stone making it look more yellow!

What is the real answer? Does it depend on the type of setting? Bezel vs claw vs etc?

It depends on how low the colour is, the setting design and what colour you want to play up/down. I have a J that looks white in a platinum bezel setting. I had my L in a white gold prong setting that looks white enough but did appear warm at times. It became much yellower when I reset it in 18K YG in prongs, which is what I wanted.

So would it be safe to say that setting a yellowish stone into a yellow gold setting will make bring out the yellow aspect?

Definitely! This is why you almost always see a yellow FCD set in yellow gold.

Thanks! I always wondered.

Setting in yellow gold will bring out the color, but it's really a preference as to which you "should" do--some people want to minimize the color or prefer white metals, and some want to bring out the color or prefer yellow gold. Search for images of packrat's reset of her AVCs from yellow gold into white gold and see the amazing difference. This is why you will see many solitaire settings in yellow gold but with a white gold or platinum crown, so the prong color doesn't reflect in the diamond itself. I'll include an image of the WF Legato Sleek Line as an example. :D
