I am wanting to buy an engagement ring for my honey but I simply want the best I can get for my budget. Is a round brilliant cut that much better than a princess cut. I know the price difference is. Could someone give me some help with a budget of about 5000. I mean should I spend more for the diamond and not worry as much about a platinum setting? Please help, I want at least a carat?

apples and oranges. people will argue that the only stone worth your money is a round....I disagree.... b/c I just love princess stones...don't know why...the question really boils down to which does she really love? Also, you might want to look at the new jubilee which is the best of both worlds...!

I AGREE AS WELL I LOVE THE PRINCESS CUT, ITS JUST THAT MOST PEOPLE SAY THERE IS NO IDEAL CUT FOR A PRINCESS CUT. I AM LOOKING AT EITHER WHITEFLASH OR BLUE NILE, I HOPE THEY ARE REPUTABLE SITES. AND WHERE CAN I FIND THIS JUBILEE CUT, IS IT LIKE THE RADIANT?

To my limited knowledge, the Jubilee is available at www.goodoldgold.com Although it's not round, it is cut in the spirit of a round with excellent internal symmetry, light return, etc. [edited to add:] Use the forum search function for "Jubilee" and you will see threads that discuss that cut.

If you're going to buy online, I would suggest researching vendors that offer a solid amount of information (pics, GIA or AGS reports, etc) on each stone so you can make an informed decision.

Hi,

My advice on the shape is:

Unless your intended or a close friend of hers that is acutely aware of her tastes and preferences indicates differntly,

Go with a round briliant cut.

Check out goodoldgold.com and I think Wink can get them too.... it's like a round shaped like a sqaure...they face up larger than almost all princess cuts...but I noticed some with depths in the high 60s and a 70. You'll get a H&A look which is awesome...it is priced as much as the H&A....but very very beautiful in my opinion...the radiant is like crushed ice....two different looks!

yo brian- don't be a princess hate'a.... LOL

I LOVE princess cuts myself and was fortunate enough to find a gorgeous stone. IMO, the nice thing about princess cuts is there's NOT an ideal. There are definitely cuts that are better than others, but if your stone is a stunner it's a stunner--there's no need to worry whether the numbers are exactly right. That being said, I would use Dave Atlas's AGA charts to guide you (but keep in mind that he will be changing the desired crown height). While going by numbers only gets you so far with princess cuts, you'll be able to better narrow down your selections. I worked primarily with Denise from White Flash who was spectacular! I sent her a spread sheet with so many diamonds listed I'm embarrassed and she was kind enough to go through all of them and give me her thoughts (the sad part is I didn't even go with any of those diamonds because I stumbled across one that just spoke to me). My point is there are great people out there who are willing to help you in your search if a princess cut is what you want. If you do want the best of both worlds, the jubilee is spectacular--I would have gone with that cut but it's too expensive for my B/F in the larger sizes and there weren't any available stones. So, I will have to wait to get one as a right hand ring....

Good luck with your search and please post diamonds you're considering!

LOL....ya, I finally did. You're the best...I really needed that upgrade policy though!

If your going to look at the Jubilee, you might as well take a look at the Regents on the Good Old Gold site. It is also an incredibly cut stone that is in between the square and round cuts. I'm waiting on my Regent which should be set and delivered within the next 3 weeks!

details please!
