The second is best

The second for me. The amount of red in that aset is a promising sign.

I also prefer the second ASET, both are nice EC's but I think the second is going to be the livelier stone.

I'm not *personally* keen on how the second one has the strong band of obstruction across the centre facets at the same time, it might mean it's a bit 'on/off', but it does seem to have brighter light return than the first and therefore stronger contrast.

So that is why I posted these. It is so hard to find an EC with a good ASET. Most show massive amounts of leakage. These are the two best I have gotten. At first I thought the second above was the one but as I looked at it more I did become concerned about the lines of obstruction and how they would affect light performance, particularly once the stone is set. I am setting it as a solitaire in James Allen’s knife edge setting so it will be raised a bit. But I was / am concerned a bit.

Thank you again!

Chris

Also would you characterize these as ‘good’ not ‘great’ ie should I keep looking?

Thank you!

Chris

Hi Chris,

It's a minefield with emerald cuts as our own strmrdr found, he spent many many years and much time learning about these shapes, what to look for and what to avoid and in the end, he designed his own Asscher cut stone, the beautiful Octavia!

The two posted aren't bad at all, in the overall scheme of EC's they're quite good in fact. Definitely worth shortlisting and we can see what else is out there if you wish. I love this one but no idea whether it's in budget or not but for me, it's an example of a beautiful EC.

What's the budget for the stone?

Hi
I wanted to stay somewhere in the 20’s for the stone. Thank you very much! That is a beautiful stone.

Ok Chris, so <30k thereabouts? We'll go to work and yes, that's a beauty isn't it....

Those are very nice. I had shied away from anything less than VVS1/2. Again ECs are a different animal and you read so many things and I thought the lower the clarity, the more chance you have of seeing the flaws given the size of the step cuts in an EC. Again I know it depends on what / where the flaws are but given I am buying this stone online and not seeing it I thought I would idiot proof it and buy a higher clarity stone with a minimum of flaws.

That's a way to go certainly with step cuts but with online, you can have a chat with the vendor with the stone in hand to advise you whether a diamond is eye clean to your specs. I'd consider VS if looking at a vendor such as JA because one of their gemologists can check for you.

Ok thank you that is helpful

We also have members with eyeclean SI stones. So, I'd keep and open mind, especially with a trusted vendor. Brian Gavin has an ideal cut EC now. Go have a look. All very nice.

You're welcome and please keep us posted! Be aware in this size stone that VS will need careful checking to make sure it's eye clean, as you know step cuts show inclusions more readily and especially the larger you go which is the case here. But a great vendor with the stone in hand is your ally here.
