Hi -

I, unfortunately, can no longer wear my engagement ring because I am getting divorced.
I hate to part with it - but I know I am not alone.

Anyway - so far I have spoken to 2 jewelers, and I got 2 very different prices.

First, here is the information on the diamond as well as the mounting:

The diamond was GIA certified in October of 1998. So unfortunately I do not have
information on the pavilion etc. Here is what I have:

Round Brilliant
6.69-6.73 x 3.76MM
1.01 carats

Depth is 56%
Table is 64%
Girdle is thin to medium, faceted
Culet - None
Polish - Very good
Symmetry - Very good
Clarity - VS2
Color - H
Fluorescence - None

I have learned that the cut is not a good one. I seem to recall that my husband
chose to go with a diamond that appeared a bit bigger, even though the depth
was sacrificed. I happen to think it is a beautiful diamond with a great deal of
beauty - but when it comes to how diamonds should be cut - this diamond was
cut to appear larger and cost less. The diamond was purchased based on a referral,
and we do know the owners.

The mounting is all platinum, diamonds in mounting are of same quality as above.
One round .40ct diamond on either side of large center stone, followed by
two baguettes on either side.

Ring''s appraisal by jeweler is $9400. I believe it cost about $7500.

Jeweler #1 called a diamond wholesaler for me in NYC and he said the diamond''s
wholesale worth (diamond alone) is $5300. He did NOT tell them the cut dimensions.
He said the total price of the ring - retail - would be about $8900 (wholesale about
$7400.) But he said ofcourse I would not get a jeweler to buy it from me for anywhere
near that. He offered to put it in his case and sell it on consignment. That he would
get 1/3 and I would get 2/3.

Jeweler #2 looked at the ring himself and immediately commented on the cut. He said
he does not even sell diamonds with a 56% depth and many people nowadays would
not buy such a diamond. He said I could not get more then $2500 for the diamond alone.
He said my best bet is to sell the ring already set - not to try and sell the diamond by
itself. He said my first step should be to go back where it was bought - and they should
try to sell it for me - for a 20% commission.

OR he suggested I remove the diamond, and put a saphire in it. Or remove the diamond
and make a pendant or ring. And take the 2 side stones and make studs. The setting he
had for a ring was very nice - and did not look like an engagement ring. But having the diamond reset in the mounting would run me about $900.

Can anyone give me a good idea on what this diamond is worth? It does not seem worth it
for me to try to sell it - I hate to lose the value of the diamond by selling it, but on the other
hand I don''t know if I want to have it reset.

Any feedback on the cut etc, is much appreciated!!

So sorry to hear about the divorce......

I hate to say it but guy#2 is much closer to reality.

When people ( consumers) want to sell diamonds to dealers, or stores, they are in a terribly "upside -down" position.
When this diamond was purchased, the price paid was quite high- so recovery becomes far more difficult. Even if the diamond was bought for a good price originally, it''s still difficult for a consumer to recoup in full- allthough, the rise in prices means it may be a little easier for those with desirable diamonds to sell.

then there''s the cut: We can''t say a diamond is well cut simply from numbers- but we can say that a diamond with a depth of 56 with a 64 table is going to be recognizable as "off made"

These two factors mean that you will get less than 1/2- possibly only 1/3- of what a well cut 1.01 H/VS2 goes for today
If you sell to a store, it will be less hassle, but you will get less than if you sell it privately.
I''d leave the ring intact, and try to sell as is.

Sorry.......

Thank you so much David, for the reply and understanding.

Considering I won''t recover the ''value'' - even though I did not purchase it,
do you think it would make more sense to have the 2 side diamonds reset as
studs and then the center stone set in a pendant or ring? Or would it be
better to sell the ring as is - assuming I can only get $2000 or a bit more for it?

Hi there iluv...

Do you need the money? And would you wear studs that are .20c each? That is what I would base my decision on.

It might not hurt to have a jeweler try to sell the ring on consignment for a while if you don''t need the money.

Hi -

Actually the studs would be .40 points each, the total diamonds in the mounting
are about .83 to include the 2 rounds and the 4 baguettes.

Oops, I''m sorry, you did say that in your original post.

Well, I just got some .41 point studs and I love the size. Do you think you''d wear them?

What about a pendant? Your center stone would make a great sized pendant!

I agree with Patty.
If you don''t need the money right now, maybe consignment is a good way to go.
Of course, you need to be sure that you are very comfortable with the store where you put the ring.

Thanks! :)
Yes I do think I would wear the studs for sure. My first holes are a bit lopsided, so when I wear studs they look a bit off. But for the 2nd holes, the studs could definitely work,
The pendant is also a consideration - it would be a nice necklace. :)

Thks again!

I''d go studs and pendent, and every time I wore them, think of the new start they represented.

Thank you - what a very sweet thing to say!

You might want to check out the different types of pendant settings in the "Show Me The Ring" forum. With your diamond being so big, it would look great in a 3-pronged "floating" style!

Also, a lot of us have gotten "martini" style earrings lately. They fit nice and snugly on the ear. There are examples of these also on the "SMTR" forum.

Hi -

I wanted to thank everyone for their responses last month regarding the selling of my ring.

I ended up selling the ring, intact, and the band - for $4,000.00

I know it was way below retail - but it was money in my pocket. And I decided I did not want
any of the diamonds - reset or not.

Thanks again!

4k sounds allot better than the 2.5k offered by the second jeweler... good for you.

If the stone looked nice, good for the buyer too! After all, numbers are just numbers.

Thanks Ana. Actually the $4K was for everything - round diamond, diamond mounting, and diamond band. Way below what it would retail for - but I really didn''t want to sell the diamond alone, and then reset two stones and be left with a few baguettes and a diamond wedding band. And this is a VERY reputable jeweler and someone friends of our family knows. I just felt it was easier to do it all at once - and was happy I found someone to take both rings.
