determining "points" on a 7 stone .77 carat weight band

Hi All,

I want to get a shared prong 7 stone band. I have often heard Pricescopers say that is a 2 pointer or 3 pointer for example to determine what may work for a soliatire pairing.

I found a .77 total carat weight 7 stone I like. I don't think I can pair it with my .75 solitaire, perhaps it will become a right hand ring.

How do I determine how many points that 7 stone .77tcw will be?
I would appreciate your feedback and help.

Thanks all!!

11 pointers :))

LOL....so you just divide...thank you for your help.

Now, is there away to determine what proportion or what # points would look well with a .75 solitaire?

I know this could be subjective, but I would like to determine what # points would look well with a .75 solitaire so the look is balanced.

I am doing online shopping so it is difficult to say although I know trying the bands on at the jewelers would be my best bet.

Nonetheless, I would appreciate your suggestions

Thanks again for your help.

I would go no more than 3-5 pts for a 3/4 ct center. 1-2 pts is a more delicate look.

Hmmm...good point. Didn't think if it that way.

I love learning from my fellow Pricescopers!!!

Can any of you direct me to specific threads/links with this type of shared prong bands for a 3/4 carat solitaire?

I I know PSers are great at creating very beautiful and varied looks.

Thanks again!!!

Why don't you go try on bands in person first?

I must make time to do so.

However, I only have Zales and Kay around me- they have limited stock, outrageous prices for the quality...and you know the rest.

Oh, go look just for the size, not actually to purchase! ;)) I think it'll be worth a trip. They might not understand what "pointers" are, since the sales people usually don't know much… but you can ask for the total carat weight and divide by the number of diamonds there.

+1.. I do this often at jewelry stores! I get weird looks when I ask for the total carat weight, and then I start counting the diamonds.
I get even weirder looks when I ask for a calculator!

@ lrning, good luck, and enjoy trying on jewelry!

Irning - all that matters is how it looks to YOUR eye. A .77 7-seven ring might look lovely on your hand , paired with your .75. I think it has to do with your finger size and finger length/nail length, your actual setting etc etc. It's not a simple calculation in my mind. Just trust your own eye.Obviously there's a point where the band totally overwhelms the solitaire - but i'm not sure you can't pull off 10-11 pointers.

Thank you all for looking and giving me advice.

It is because of Pricescope that I have a nice "well cut" center stone, although not as big as the other bold, beautiful, bling I have seen here.

I must go to all different shops, even the little one, and just try on a bunch of bands.

I just love it when I read posts like this! :D

I would get 1-2 pointers with your solitaire... :))

OMG, I've done the exact some thing (for reference, of course... ;)) ) and have gotten the most dumbfounded looks from the SAs!!

I once asked an associate which alloy of platinum they used in house because I wanted the least patina possible. She explained to me that "an alloy is plated to the finish, so it'll be shiny anyway." What a minute... WHAT??!! Not only did she have no idea what I was talking about, she thought that rhodium plating is the "alloy." Niiiiiice.

Sorry for the threadjack, OP!!

I just googled a chart with carat weight and corresponding mm diameters fir diamond round brilliant cuts.

It said a .10 is about 3mm. So the 11 pointer means .11 carats right???

So that being so, the .77 tcw 7 stone bans would be 3.1 mm thic
Given my stone is .75 or 6 mm the 3.1 mm diamond band may be much. Although, you must try to decide on your own.

@msop04 - Thanks PS is the best! So when you say 1 or 2 pointers a .02 carat weight of a single stone in a 7 band is about 1.7 mm, which is good because my solitaire's band is about 2mm. However a 0.03 carat is 2mm so 0.03×7=0.21tcw for a 7 stone. Does that make sense???

Sorry, I don't mean to turn this into rocket science, but is taht how this works.LOL

I know you must do a visual and try in, but I also like to know how the system works. Haha.

Eek- sorry for my typos as I am using my cell screen.

I have a 7 stone band that has almost 11 pointers (.75 ctw). I thought the stones were a little too big for the 1.5 ct diamond I had at the time. I think smaller diamond bands are more complimentary to every size diamond. It is a matter of personal taste and preference, but I still prefer my thin diamond band with my current diamond that is over 2 cts! When the stones in the band are too big, I think it takes away from the e-ring stone. I like 10 pointers but with a e-ring diamond of over 2 cts.

I kind of agree with this. If you don't want it to look like an anniversary band, you will want the side diamonds to be more accents than compete with the center stone. Unless you are looking for an 7 stone, anniversary look (which is also nice, but different)

You know I realize I misread the initial post, I thought you wanted the stones wet with the 75 pointer.

If it is a different ring, really up to you what you think looks best.
