Determining Clarity

What would you grade a diamond that has no visible inclusions looking at it from the top but looking from the side you can see some? Is the I1 grade based on looking at a diamond from all angles (or any clarity grade)? Are the clarity grades based on looking at a diamond under a bright light with an unaided eye or are they put under a "special" light? I''m confused!

SI stones may have inclusiions visible from the sides but normally eye clean faceup. Cindy

Diamonds are graded for clarity from a crown view... From the top down, not from the side... The facets along the underside of the diamond are not intended to hide the inclusions...
