Hi everyone,

First post here but have been using the HCA score for a month or so now. I'm in desperate need for help on choosing which diamond is better. It's now down to two diamonds; for various reasons, I cannot choose other diamonds at this point...

The diamonds are pretty much identical spec wise except of course the measurements. Both diamonds are:
1.15 carat
F
VVS1
Triple EX
No fluorescence

Diamond 1: 6.75 - 6.79 x 4.07 mm - HCA score 1.3 - Quadruple Excellent result

Diamond 2: 6.78 - 6.82 x 4.14 mm - HCA score 1.8 - Excellent fire, the rest very good

Diamond 2 is about $200 USD more, so price really isn't a huge factor at this point. I've seen both diamonds in person under ideal scope and the arrows/hearts do seem slightly better on diamond 1 (quadruple ex one). However, it's not bad either on diamond 2. Without the ideal scope, diamond 2 FEELS to have more fire, but I feel in one moment it's noticeable but the next minute they both look the same with the naked eye...ugh.....

I've scoured the forums and see that 59% table generally isn't as desirable, as it's more brilliance (white) than fire (rainbow). However, the HCA score is quite different on paper and the 59% table diamond has a perfect score.

Sorry I don't have aset/ideal scope images. What are your thoughts guys? Should I take the HCA result with a grain of salt? It should be used more for elimination rather than selection right? Which one would you choose based on all the info above?

Many thanks in advance!!!

You might not get much love here for either stone as they don't fall within the parameters that we would stick with for ideal cut stones. A lower crown means less fire so it depends on what you prefer in a diamond.

If you were to pursue either of them, people will want to see aset/idealscope imaging to see what light leakage is apparent in order to give more informed feedback.

HCA is for elimination rather than selection.

If you like either of the stones and you have seen them with your own eyes, then go with the one that you prefer. Your eyes don't lie.

Or, if you want people here to find you something better, then post your requirements and budget and I am positive once everyone wakes up, they will help you out.

You're in great hands here. Good luck.

If it were for me and these were the only two options, I would take the first one. However, is there any reason you cant do better? An
aset image would definitely be a good idea for these stones.

Thank you both for your input. Again, for various reasons (and reasons I rather not discuss), these are my only two options at this point. Both are priced at around $10,000 USD and I feel although they aren't the best diamonds out there, the prices are decent.

Hope to see more input but thanks anyways to this community!

The HCA tool tend to give a harsh score for diamonds over 41 pavillion.
I don't doubt that you noticed more sparkle on the second stone and the proportions lie more within the middle sweet spot of the ideals than the first one near the edge.

However, don't let the HCA score or the numbers make the decision for you.
Nothing beats your eyes when it comes to the final stone selection.
Just be sure to view both stones in different lights, such as under florescent light, daylight, in a shadow - anywhere else but under the jewler's light before making your decision. Turn them around in various lighting and see which one looks more lively.

Perfectly said by @blueMA. This is wonderful advice and I would further urge you to make some time when you do this. Do not feel rushed. In my experience some people can detect performance nuances quickly, in the same way some folks are very color-sensitive. But most people develop that palate after some time has been spent making comparisons. I encourage buyers never to rush this, because for sure the person wearing the diamond will become adept at perceiving its specific qualities, wearing it day after day.

While the numbers are not perfectly within the ideal range, if graded by AGSL by their proportion chart, both would be in the Idea/Excellent range. The first will be more brilliant (white light return) and lack fire. The second has a bit more balance between fire and brilliance. But, you really can't select 60/60 stones without your eyes loving it or images (IS/ASET) to tell you about light return as they don't really conform to a set of numerical standards like ideal-modern rounds.

If I had to choose between these, sight unseen and only by these numbers, I'd choose #1 as I know *I* like fiery modern rounds.

Can you take the advise above and see them in person? Can you buy an Idealscope image and take your own to see the light return?

In addition to the two diamonds I posted above, you might consider getting in touch with Wink Jones outside of Pricescope. He seems to have several options around your budget. The PS community swears by his product and staff. I'm sure he can help you pick out something superior.
