Hello,

I was hoping that someone would help me figure out what kind of depth/table is best for an emerald cut diamond.

I like the look of a more rectangular/longer emerald cut, rather than a more square stone.

Thanks, I really appreciate the help!

Hi Lulu!!

ECs are a beautiful cut, but the Depth/Table numbers should only be used as a GUIDELINE...not an "end-all-be-all." ECs have to be seen to see how the cut ulitmately impacts the stone...that disclaimer being said:

The Depth "should" be about 60% - 65% with the Table being smaller than the Depth percent-wise.

If you like the rectangular shape, you''re probably looking for a ratio of about 1.5 - 1.7...

Good luck!!!

Thanks so much! That was exactly the info I was hoping for.

What happens once you move outside that range -- say to a 70% table 69% depth...

Lulu...
If the depth becomes too deep, you "could" end up with a stone that looks smaller than it really is because more of the stone is towards the bottom.
If the table becomes too big, you "could" end up with a stone with a "glassy" appearance...

Again, seeing the stone is going to be most important!!

There''s also quite a bit more that goes into the appearance of an EC than the table and depth. Table and depth are merely the tips of the iceberg in determining whether or not a stone looks good. Go up to the "Knowledge" pull-down menu and see "Fancy Shapes."

Oh, and good luck with your stone. ECs are definitely my favorite common fancy shape!

Hi Lulu,
Hest makes a great point- nuners alone tell little about an emerald cut.

As far as specifics- the numbers that AChiOAlumna listed are not useable.
I have seen amazing emerald cuts with 70% depth- and only rarely seen an Emerald of 60% depth- I can''t remember the last 60% depth stone I''ve seen.
Combine this with the statement about having a table being smaller than depth, and you''ve got a formula which includes hardly any emerald cuts- while excluding some of the nicest ones I''ve ever seen.

David...

I''m gonna have to respectively disagree here... I did initially say that numbers are only a guide and that your eyes have to ultimately be the judge here...that being said, I used the numbers as a "guideline" when I was looking for my EC stone. I found myself that tables above 70% began to have a glassy effect to the stone and depths at that number also began to look smaller. My own EC is 65% in depth and 63% on the table...and it sparkled/performed better than any other EC that I saw in person (and I saw quite a few!!) Maybe the 70% stones that I saw had other qualities that made them look unappealing, but even the AGA shows the following guidelines of a 1A to 2A stone to be: Table 60 - 69.5%
& Depth 60 - 69%.

Again, I acknowledged that numbers aren''t the end all be all, but they do "help" as a guideline....
