Definitely not a peridot!

My DH gave me a bunch of gem ID tools for the holiday. He also bought a very inexpensive “peridot” ring so I could have something to evaluate with all the new tools. It doesn’t seem like any of my peridots (all verified stones). It tests as sapphire, but for the price he paid it has to be synthetic. Anyone have experience with something like this?

Many lab created gemstones are corundum coloured to mimic a range of other gemstones. Other lab created materials include, Spinel even Quartz.
lab grown corrundum with a hardness of 9 is a hard wearing material, better than natural peridot which is a lot softer.

Absolutely. That’s why I think it’s man made.

Refractometer: 1.71
Smart Pro Gemi1 Gem tester : ruby/sapphire
I’m still getting the hang of the diachroscope, so that’s unknown at the moment. It’s too small for me to see well.
Loupe & Microscope : super clean - too clean, I think.

Those truly don't look like any peridots that I've ever seen.
Perhaps its a lab made yellow sapphire, although I do not have
too much knowledge on lab gems. Maybe its real?
Anyone want to chime in?

Agreed. I have several natural peridots, and this looks nothing like them. Also, they didn’t test as peridot on any of the new gem toys.

First of all, I know nothing. Just chiming in to say I have seen peridots that color. In fact, up until the last ten years or so, that's what color I always thought they were.

Tests indicate sapphire - including the refractometer. My peridots test completely differently- including my pair of smaller light stones (I agree the color is similar to the photos - but not irl) so I think it incredibly unlikely it is a peridot. But I’m definitely not an expert- so much to learn!

Thats the color that my monitor shows.

Chrysoberyl? Grossular Garnet?

It’s testing as ruby/sapphire (so does synthetic sapphire). The clues I think are likely to be the color pooling, zoning, and the clarity. It was sold as a peridot, but testing so far does not support that.

I’ll look up the refractive index of chrysoberyl and garnet, but I think we checked those, too. The RI was 1.71 (same as my confirmed sapphire)

What kind of ring was it in? Very nice puffy crown on the not-a-peridot. =)2
It was in a simple solitaire - set super high! I love the look of it - and really liked the color. In the setting, it just sparkles!

Any chance the stone is antique? It is REALLY well cut, and the crown proportions are similar to old cuts. Honestly I think this stone is worth checking out, based on how beautiful and beautifully cut it is. I also see what might be color zoning... do synthetics have color zoning? Could it be natural? It's expensive to cut a stone that beautifully. If it's synthetic it's a really, really nice one. Either way it deserves to be set!

I know when synthetic sapphires came out they were looked at very favorably and sometimes set in platinum and natural diamond settings. I also know for a fact that they have color zoning, and it's always curved.

I'm not sure about OPs stone but it'd be awesome if it was a natural antique sapphire!

All great questions. I really don’t know because DH bought it online just as a prop for the tools. They sold it as a peridot. I’ll ask him for the listing to see if any clues are there. Regarding the color zoning - I don’t know the answers. I’m hoping PS experts may chime in :) it’s really a great stone. I was sure when we unmounted it and put it in the refractometer it would come out as plastic or glass ... definitely not either:)

It would be fun! I’m just not sure of the color zoning. It was set in a simple 9kt yellow gold solitaire (set VERY high).

So this is the description from the seller:
Vintage 7 mm round peridot evaluated in the setting. 10k yellow gold (stamped and tested) setting - 9.5mm tall.

Like I said, the setting is really tall - probably about half the height) ;-)

In a funny and random turn of events, the seller owns a shop in the town where I grew up (I live across the country now and have for many years)! We are going to contact him and see if he knows any more about the piece.

A 9 or 10k gold piece without diamonds is considered to be essentially costume jewelry. Based on all the factors here I am betting synthetic sapphire.

That sounds about right. We’ve asked the seller if he has any more info.

If you are measuring a refractive index 1.71 than it's not sapphire. Sapphire should be 1.76.

Have you confirmed that your refractometer is accurate? What brand is it? Do you have a polarizing filter on your refractometer? If so, have you checked for two readings for each orientation? You should be taking 4 orientations, with two readings at each one.
