I am in the market searching for a replacement diamond since my wife''s rings were misplaced/lost and have not shown back up in the last 3 months.

I have two stones from my jeweler that I am considering and there is only ~$100 price difference between the two so I figured I would ask the experts on pricescope for their personal opinion.

Stone 1:GIA (inscribed) Princess
F VS2
.86ct
5.37 x 5.20 x 3.66
EX/VG
Tbl: 69
dep: 70.4
Girdle: sl thk - thk

Stone 2: GIA Princess
F SI1 (eye clean)
.97
5.5 x 5.31 x 3.95
VG/G
tbl: 70
dep: 74.4
girdle: thk - ex thk

My thought was the stones will appear extremely similar in size regardless of the ct weight due to the ex thk and extra depth of the 2nd stone. However, the first stone gives me a better clarity and what i believe to be a much nicer cut. So what would you pick?

I''m not an expert but a few things stood out for me:
Stone 1 and Stone 2 are both not very square but look to be almost the same measurement (5.37 x 5.2 and 5.5 x 5.31 respectively). Stone 2 has only VG/G for polish and symmetry which I would pass on. I would prefer the diamond to have at least VG/VG ratings for both. I can''t comment any further on the diamonds without pictures and ASET scans.

Welcome Nick! Ditto on not being an expert either, all I can suggest is that if you have seen both diamonds and really like one of them, then that might be the right one! As Chrono says, we can't really offer much help without photos of the diamond and an ASET image. However you have the advantage in as much as you have actually seen the diamonds and can see if one speaks to you. One thing I can say, is to see if the store will let you check the stones out in different lights, diamonds don't always sparkle and can be reliant on the available light. In a jewellery store, it is specially lit, so see if you can look at the diamonds in daylight etc, but even while in rest mode, a diamond should still look attractive if not blinging away at that moment!

Have you considered looking at online diamonds at all?

Hope this helps and I am sorry about your Wife's original rings.

I appreciate the replies I have received so far. In response to looking at diamonds online I have been paying attention, but dealing with the insurance company to replace the ring I really have to resort to having 1 vendor handle the entire ring. I had the setting previously made by KAO jewelers in Philadelphia (Next door to Dave Atlas) and have what I believe to be a fantastic relationship with them.

I did notice that the one stone I was looking at is available online (or was) thru whiteflash at a fairly competitive price, so I am not worried about being gouged by going directly to the jeweler.

I will take everyones advice and take a look at the stones in person and see what my personal reaction is after seeing the stones in daylight.

Can anyone comment on the squareness of the two diamonds? I guess I originally thought they were pretty square but would be curious on what the lack of a perfect square would do to brilliance/sparkle and even the cost.

Thanks
