Hello everyone,

What can I say. I met this lovely lady my senior year of high school and now going into my 3rd year of grad school I''ve decided the time is right to pop the question. I have a limited budget (grad school should lead to great job security but who''s ever heard of a rich grad student?) so I''m looking for a ring between 1,500 to 2,000 but that''s somewhat flexible if it will make a significant difference. I sort of feel bad bothering ya''ll but seeing the number of hopelessly confused guys you''ve helped in the past..

I think I''ve succeeded in narrowing down things at least some. I want a simple white band (either solitary or three stone). I''ve pretty much settled on the round (though oval or coushin may be ok) and I don''t neeed H&A or anything (I don''t even really think Betty would like that). I''m comfortable getting an I or J so long as they have a good cut and decent clarity. In my head I understand that pretty much anything that isn''t gaudy will be well received but of course in my heart I want to give my lady love the best. Oh yea and I stole one of her rings that I think is the right size and traced it on some paper so while I don''t have the exact ring size yet I should have that taken care of.

So all that brings me to a couple of questions:

1) I know that I should get a white band instead of a gold one, but the difference between white gold and platinum isn''t really all that clear. I figure I''ll get platinum, but do they look that different? Is the gold less durable and are they equally easy to resize? Any thoughts/suggestions on the pros/cons of one over the other?

2) It seems like preset rings are cheaper. The obvious con is that you probably can''t inspect the diamond as closely, and I guess I''m wondering if that''s the reason why most places/people seem to buy the diamond and the ring seperately. And I guess the question is would I be foolish (perhaps that''s too strong a word.. ill-advised) to look at the preset rings?

I''m sure I''ll have tons more questions, and I''ll try to keep the asking of questions already answered to a minimum but I greatly appreciate your help.

How about a great diamond such as this which is well within budget...

http://www.whiteflash.com/round_ideal_cut/Round-Ideal-Cut-cut-diamond-2435230.htm#

place into a simple setting and you are set.

Just to give you an idea.

The o.545 G/SI Lorelei picked looks very nice.
Here are a couple more for you to consider:
http://www.goodoldgold.com/diamond/2287/ 0.611 H/SI1
http://niceice.com/certcopies/gia14736876/index.htm 0.61 G/SI1

They are all in the $1,500-1,600 range, leaving enough room for a plain platinum setting or a sturdy gold one.
Here is a slightly more expensive one you can find at www.winkjones.com
0.74 J SI1 $1,935 PGS 61.6 56 None Excellent Excellent Strong Blue 34.5 15 40.5 43 5.82-5.85x3.60 6532 H&A.

Wow...good find giangi! That looks like the perfect stone and wink has some very affordable settings that wouldn''t take him too far over budget...

I''d be all over that one!

I would definately go with platinum, In addition to having a heavier more substantial feel, some people react to white gold and it turns grey or even yellowish. It would then need to be plated to be white again.

Platinum will never have that problem. It is more pure.

Also, with you budget (very respectable for a grad student by the way), I would stick with a solitare vs a 3 stone. Focus your budget on getting once nice stone instead of 3 stones.

Then if she loves the 3 stone look, for an aniiverary down the line, you can buy her 2 more stones to make a 3 stone.

I think for your budget you can get a really nice 1/2-3/4 stone.

Focus on cut, cut, cut, that will make the diamond sparkle like crazy. I like clean stones, and would not go below an SI1 for your budget, or even a VS2.

Good luck!

Wow. Ya''ll are great! I need to get away from the internet so I can get some work done, but I had a quick question. on jamesallen.com you can see pictures of some of the diamonds. Some of the pictures are bright and some are dark. I was wondering if they''d still be that bright/dark if I went in to see them or if it had more to do with the lighting in the picture and the photographer trying to bring out different things.

After spending some time this morning searching I''ve stumbled across these two. Any thoughts?

looking at the three I put up here makes me think I need to take a minute and get a little more specific on exacly what i''m looking for in the color/clarity department. I''ll see what I can do about that and maybe bring back a more narrowly focused list to ask about. Thanks for putting up with me while I figure this all out.
