I''ve been perusing these boards for a while but this is my first post!

My boyfriend and I have been ring shopping for months now...after meeting wtih several jewelers and staring at TONS of stones, we''re in the home stretch-- we have narrowed it down to 2 options. Here are the relevant facts on the stones/pricing:

1.7ct, E color, VS1 clarity-- $12,650
1.71ct, F color, VS2 clarity-- $11,200

So the real question here....is it worth spending the extra money for such a slight difference in the stone''s color/clarity? Your input would be VERY MUCH appreciated so we can move it all along already!!!

Hi Rebecca and welcome!

I take it you have seen these diamonds in person? Are they both GIA graded? For me it would depend on the cut quality of each and the appearance/ shape which to choose, if GIA graded the colour and clarity of each are both excellent quality, do you have a preference between them?

Is there a possibility you could get any images? What you could do if you are concerned about the cut quality and you have time, is to purchase anASET scope, they are straightforward to use with a little practise and can give you a better idea of the diamond's cut quality.

It would also be helpful if you could post the following info on each assuming they are GIA graded, you will find the info below on the report.

depth%
table %
polish and symmetry grades
girdle thickness
diameter in mm

Other than that, see if you can check the diamonds out away from any bright store lights to see how they look, if that isn't possible then try this test. It isn't a perfect method but hold both diamonds under a desk and watch to see what happens, a well cut stone won't suffer too badly from the reduction in light but a badly cut diamond will appear to visibly shrink and lose a lot of its power.

I love ECs, personally, and think they''re a great choice! Unfortunately, but we need a bit more info to help. Do a quick search on ECs on this board and also take a look at this to get a better idea of the parameters you should be looking at:

Diamonds are about optics, so a fine cut is the most important aspect. I know it can be confusing but with some education and some help from these boards you can get a stunning stone---with a bit of work.
