Hi everyone,

As someone who knows very little about diamonds, this forum has been absolutely amazing in getting up to speed about what I should be looking out for to get the absolute best quality diamond for the girl I love. You've helped so many people find absolutely amazing diamonds and I was hoping you could do the same for me!

I live in Sydney Australia and want to get the best bang for my buck. Ideally I would propose in early or mid march (I'm planning to take her on a hot air balloon ride in the Hunter Valley https://www.balloonaloft.com/locations/hunter-valley), but I am prepared to wait if needs be to get the right ring.

What she wants:
She has sent me a picture of the kind of ring that she would like which I have attached. Initially she wanted a halo cushion or princess cut with pave band however I think she loves this solitaire with pave band and these claw prongs. In terms of the diamond itself, she just wants it to be as big, shiny and sparkly as possible

My ideal diamond:
I think all guys who start looking for rings want to get the best 'deal' for their money. I would like a cushion cut diamond (although a cut like august vintage would be what I would pick, considering she wants shiny and sparkly, I think a conventional modern cut is what I should go for). I would value cut (? ideal) most importantly for the diamond itself (although she probably may not realise that I am paying more for this). As long as the diamond is eye clean, clarity is not as important for me. The colour and the carat I would like to maximise for my budget.

Setting:
Ideally a delicate solitaire setting with claw prongs and pave diamond band. My partner likes both rose gold and platinum. (Picture attached)

All important budget:
Between $10,000 and absolute maximum $15,000 Australian dollars shipped and with taxes paid. So that would be 7,500 to 11,000 USD (pre 10% australian GST customs will charge me :(2

Because I am buying from Australia, ideally I would like to buy the diamond and setting from one vendor (I think it would be hard to coordinate it otherwise). If any sydney siders would reccomend a local vendor as well I would be all ears but short of buying from Tiffany which won't maximise my budget I really wouldn't know where to go.

Thank you so much in advance! I promise to post photos of the ring and shots of her hand if I'm lucky enough that she says yes!

You do realize that picture you posted is a pretty big stone (probably not in your budget)?

I went down to H/SI1 and up to $8k for the stone (1.5 carat). This is what I found... You would need to request an aset for any stone you are interested in.

James Allen is running a 25% OFF settings right now. You would have to ask for claw prongs (may have to pay extra for them).
Are you saying she wants double claw prongs like in the picture?

Actually, you’ll find very few modern cushions that are cut as well and have the light performance of an AVC. So I think you’d have a much easier time of finding a well cut stone if you look at AVCs! All vendors can get pave settings like that, so you won’t have a problem getting that style setting.

Platinum is more timeless. I love rose gold, but it goes in and out of popularity. So I might get a right hand ring or necklace in it but not my wedding set.

(While I was writing, tyty posted some nice modern cushions, if that is what you prefer!)
