Hello all,

This past weekend I visited the local upscale mall (which had a De Beers retail store).

The sales person pointed out they have a machine to show customers the light reflection of their diamonds. Their website calls it the "Beauty Scan".

How does this relate or compare to the Firescope/Ideal scope. And if viewed from the pavilion side, will it show a "heart" like pattern if optically symmetrical? I''m not sure what the forum rules are for posting vendor links...if you Google De Beers Beauty Scan it should be the first match. You will need Adobe Flash to view it.

I really like the fact they have this. I may not be able to correctly interpret the image, but Tiffany or HW only has their certificates/reports....

Based on the videos here it appears to be a thingie you look into that has lights that move above the diamond.

Not an IS, can''t tell what it is.

My guess:

Looks like a single color moving ASET - the light source moves uniformly across all the diamond veiwing angles slowly to display light return at each angle.

It will give a relatively good idea of symetry, but confuses the eye more than anything because it takes 30 seconds to see what a static ASET will tell you in less than a second, not to mention that it doesn''t let you separate better light return angles (red on an aset) from less optimal light return angles (green).

It will sure sell symetrical diamonds to the ladies though! Who doesn''t like to see pretty snowflakes and starbursts of light from their perfect diamond?

Yes there are so many colors I''m not really sure what is "good". On the website, the "good" one has well defined shapes/patterns due to strong reflection. I need to further investigate if one color is brighter/darker due to less leakage (similar to the red/pink/white of the Idealscope).

I''m wondering if you could see a difference in output between 2 stones, with say HCA=3.0 and HCA=0.5, when examined using their machine.

I think when I make my appointment with De Beers I should ask for the software documentation lol.
