My birthday is coming up in about six weeks and I am thinking it is a good excuse to add a new piece! I love Elfirede's graduated DBTY necklace and also like the 10 diamond 18 pointers IDJ DBTY. I don't recall if that necklace was ever actually purchased but a photo of it was posted a while back. I already know that the diamonds will flip but I am concerned that they might also slip and slide and I don't want the large, center stone to end up on the side or back of my neck should I decide on a graduated DBTY! If I go with the 18 pointer that is not something I have to worry about.

Elfriede, do the diamonds on your DBTY slide? Do other owners of DBTY necklaces experience this problem?

I have a DBTY custom made by Whiteflash. It has 10 stones that are 15 pointers, so very close to what you are thinking, and they are all the same size. The necklace does spin on my neck so I have to occasionally move it so the clasp is in the back of my neck....just like any other necklace. I can't answer for Elfriede, but I would be surprised if her necklace doesn't spin also. I know it would personally drive me nuts to constantly make sure that biggest diamond is in the proper place.

A necklace that constantly has to be readjusted would drive me nuts as well. I was hoping that perhaps a larger center stone "anchors" the necklace.

You'd have to have a pretty huge largest stone to anchor a DBY! But I strongly recommend all the same size since almost all necklaces move around. I do sometimes wear a pendant on mine, and that does anchor it somewhat.

What a great birthday present project! I am sure you will love your necklace. As for me, I am very very pleased with mine. It DOES stay centered and I have never experienced that the center stone slides on the back, perheaps a bit to the side sometime but not more than an inch. I have to note here that I just have 5 larger diamonds 0.12 - 0.20 - 0.31 - 0.18 - 0.12 spaced 4-2-2-2-2-4 to the center, so no way it could slide to the back :appl:

However, there is just one thing I would change in the design if I do it again..currently the center stone has the loops at 3 and 9 o'clock, just like other smaller diamonds. The diamonds do flip all the time, which is not bad with smaller stones, but I prefer to see the largest stone face up most of the time. So next time I would make the bezel for the center stone at 10 and 2 o'clock, like in Tiffany solitaire version. I hope that way it will stay face up. Oh...and this I would do with larger diamond, 60-70 pointers. Just need to save my pennies.. :naughty:

So in my experience with graduated DBTY it does stay centered, but the flipping of the largest diamond is annoying, so will try to improve it, as I absolutely love the style. I hope that info helps..cheers :wavey:

Thanks so much for the info. I love the idea of a DBTY necklace and love how those necklaces look on all the ladies who own them but I am worried that the flipping will drive me insane if the suggestion that you made about setting the center stone like the Tiffany Solitaire doesn't work (I think it just might). I did have another project in mind so I will have to decide fairly soon what it is I want to do. I too would love a big center stone (and that would solve the flipping problem!) but sadly my budget is not large enough.
