Ok, we have the place, time and date for getting engaged sorted (and the girlfriend of cause) but the problem is the ring.

We are both slightly old fashioned and therefore think it should be given as a surprise at the point of asking. I dont have a clue what style to get though.... my original thoughts had been a simple brilliant round cut stone in a tiffany style plain platinum ring.

After fishing a little she said that she liked emerald cut diamonds the most as they are the most "sparkly" - I am not keen on this cut as to me they look probably the least sparkly and having done some online shopping around nothing with this cut has really stood out within my price range (£2,500 tops). Then when having found another excuse to talk about rocks she said that she didnt have any particular preference for the emerald cut... back to square one.

Unfortunately her own jewellary was lost a few years ago before I knew her and all she has now are a few very simple pieces of silver with no stones at all. Her family do not speak english and aren''t in the UK so cannot really go down that route either.

I did think of going back to idea one, a high quality but small stone (she has very small hands) in a simple setting where the setting could be changed to something more to her taste at a later date without too much loss but given I dont even know what cut to get....

How do you go about dealing with these things?

Awww. I feel so bad for you reading this post. What a confusing position to be in!

SO.. first... WELCOME. You''ve found the right place for help and we''ll do all that we can to help you.

Second, because you sound like you need one... A BIG HUG.

Now... let me think and see what I come up with.

I''m leaning toward something sparkly but square. Probably a lovely cushion, as they are classic, timeless and out of the common run, like emerald cuts, but sparkly to satisfy you.

I don''t know exchange rates so let me do some research on that and see what your budget can get you... and then I''ll see if I can find a nice rectangular cushion to recommend.

Do you know if her tastes in clothing and furniture run toward more vintage/antique things, more ''cutting edge'' modern, casual, or ''classic'' (think black dresses and pearls).

Okay so budget is 4000 USD.

And you are in the UK so we have to worry about VAT and so forth. I ALMOST want to suggest a round from Infinity as they have European presence, fabulous diamonds, and one of our UK PSers bought from an Infinity dealer out there with great success. But they only do rounds and princesses. And I'm just not getting a round or princess vibe.

I also understand from other UK PSers that size is NOT the most important thing. So most UK engagement rings are under a carat in size. Sooo... tell me what you think of all of that.

And let me go hunting.

Gypsy, I think Dr Indira Marchant does sell fancy shapes such as EC's so maybe worth asking her

www.bestdiamonds.co.uk

Definitely size isn't a big thing either here ( unless its me - hehe)

Here''s my first suggestion.

http://www.goodoldgold.com/diamond/5971/ 2500 if you wire the funds. F color (colorless) and VS2 (very slightly included). Bright and absolutely stunning (there is even a video). .70 which is a lovely size.

I would like to know more about her taste in clothing and furnishings before suggesting a setting to you.

Gypse

Many thanks for such a swift reply.... both of us like the "sparkly" element but the difference comes as to if emerald cut is sparkly or not.... imo it isnt, in her initial opinion she said it was but then back tracked the next time.

Her tastes vary massively she has everything from 40s/ 50s vintage through north african to modern in terms of both clothing and her costume jewelry (we are both 30 to give some context to the vintage clothing)

Furnishings style is more difficult as she moved in with me and so most are to my "taste" than ours. I know she dislikes the current furnishings which are all very modern/ minimalistic/ neutral as she says it doesnt feel like a home but a hotel, she prefers things more colourful and with more life/ soul (probably from her latino side). That said she just bought 2 floor standing lanterns which are all glass and chrome (with a leather handle) that to me are very much against what she says she likes

Ahhh... see, Lorelei (being in the U.K.) would know! EC''s have a VERY special charm. No they are not sparkly and brilliant. But as I promise you (as I wear one) that if you get one that is well cut and BRIGHT you will be amazed at how lovely they are. The problem is, and I''ll be frank, that there are a LOT (and I do mean a LOT) of dead, glassy, ugly EC''s out there.

Something with soul.

Okay. I'd put that cushion in a James Meyer. Hands Down. And his prices are reasonable. 1000-1300 for gold settings. And all hand fabricated and extremely detailed and frankly just art.

Here''s a personal favorite setting by him. And you can get it in all white metal as he does each setting to order, from scratch.

And my strengths, especially in comparison to you, isn't in diamond stats and IS images and interpreting ASETs and so forth... AT ALL, so we're a good match! 1203 by Caleb is looking really good to me though for my sapphire. If the stone is light enough that I can bezel it, if not... prongs and some diamonds to lighten it. Or just re-sell it if I really don't like it and keep looking. Sapphires are moody creatures.
