David Klass will be sourcing a custom cut OEC for me. I've fallen in love with OEC's but know very little about the specifics that make one a good one. Are there optimal parameters for an OEC? I do know I would like the stone to have a nice amount of fire/flash and a pretty petal pattern. This is vague I know but it's also why I need guidance. I want to be truly happy with what I receive. Please help!!

I would find pictures of OECs I liked and send those to DK. Do you have any details on rings that DK has provided the OEC for?
Just curious... Is it going to be returnable if the faceting pattern isn't to your liking? I'm unsure if adding a middleman (DK)
to the mix is abig help. (Don't get me wrong, I love DK!).

My advice to someone new to this would be to
1) find a stone that is already cut, OR,
2) have one cut through SouthWest Diamond Cutters. They have done quite a few for Pricescopers and know what stones
are good for recuts.

@Inked gives a lot of details in these threads. She has done 2 recuts through SW.

Good luck...you've come to the right place!

@tyty333 covered the the most important aspects. I'll add that you want the facets to flash on and off. You don't want an OEC with a center that goes dark all at once. This thread shows an example of what you want to avoid.

Thank you! I also don't have much experience with finding a stone that is already available. DK is taking the lead here since we are going through insurance to replace my lost engagement ring and he is the jeweler we worked with prior. Sending photos of OEC's I like is a really good suggestion. I definitely like the flower patterns. Will give the posts you mentioned a read through as well.

If I'm understandanding there are no parameters for OEC like there are for other diamonds were there are numbers you can analyze to rule things out? My last engagement ring had a sapphire center stone so diamonds are definitely not in my wheel house.

Thank you this post was helpful. Especially to my untrained eye that is not sure what to look for. I feel certain and excited about my new engagement ring but I'm very nervous too as I feel very out of my element with diamonds overall and my very limited knowledge of OEC's as well.

No, there are no good parameters for OECs except what GIA provides for what defines an OEC (not going to help though because
doesn't mean its going to make for a pretty stone).
OECs must meet 3 of the 4 criteria. However, I think there are guidelines when picking a Round Brilliant to have cut into an OEC to look
for. Like making sure you have a high enough crown angle. DK is pretty good at providing customers what they like/want so I'll
assume that he's going to find you a stone that you like.

Thank you for the reassurance. I think providing photos and some videos of what I like will hopefully set the tone for a positive end result. I'm so excited for this project to get going. It's been moving a long very, very slowly. But now I think the ball will get rolling and I'm starting to feel more comfortable with what my likes/dislikes in OEC's are!

Just following up as DK offered to source me an OEC as well. All I have are the stats 9mm G Vs1. I did ask for photos.

Was curious how your experience panned out

My stone has arrived!! Can I please get some input? I have requested a video as David didn't send one. Diamond 2.9-2.jpg

I received the pictures today but have requested a video. I am unsure. I've requested videos. Waiting for both opinions from the experts and videos.

Oooo ... I'm not an OEC expert, but that looks like it has real potential! Am eager to see what the experts think.

I hope so! It's hard for me to tell with the still photos.

Wondering if the yellow in the stone is just a reflection of the environment?

You mean on the en face view? I'm pretty sure that's environmental from how it reflects off several facets. But again, we'll defer to the experts.

Yes on the face view it had a little yellow tint.

Can’t make any definitive comments bc the lighting in those pictures is not really the kind we want (it’s like a flat light box kinda thing). I don’t see red flags. If it matters, those are weird proportions like most of these new cut “OECs” are. Just a mix of MRB and old cut proportions. So if you are after authentic OEC look this isn’t it, but it could still be sparkly.

The center looks good and bright but it’s not really petal-y (bubbly) if that’s what you’re looking for. I had a few OECs from Jon (Rhino) and one of mine looked like this one, so it must appeal to many. Does it appeal to you?

I also prefer the bubbly petals. But I see this cut a lot. I don't think it's bad. It's just preference.

I like the large culet. The video looks like it has kozibe going on, which I find desirable. Do you like it?

Once I saw the video I was in love!

I don't think the photos do the stone justice.

I think it's beautiful! I like the flashes of light I'm seeing in the videos.

It sounds like you love it, which is totally fine, but since this is PS and we are centered around cut quality and I think it’s important to make informed choices about the pros and cons of particular diamonds, I do think it’s important to point out that this diamond has similar obstruction issues that I was talking about in another thread with someone considering a similar old style cut. That is not desirable from a cut perspective and it’s something many of us have written a lot about when evaluating old cuts..

Like ideally all three of these pavilion mains (arrows you could say) wouldn’t be dark at the same time. But it could just be a weird angle. In person though if they go dark all at once like this in person then that area of the table will just look less lively and somewhat dark.

This is @HS4S_2 new transitional cut, a true antique. See how the central facets are all sort of chaotically lit up and no two beside each other are dark and certainly not three adjacent. Now these are different cut styles and your lab OEC has a weird combo of modern and antique that doesn’t typically exist in reality, but this here is the ideal to create a very lively stone that will never go dull or over dark under the table. There is some obstruction at 9 0’clock, you can’t avoid it in any diamond and old cuts especially are more prone, but it’s minimal and doesn’t detract in any way from its beauty.

You can see it in this still from the video and it is also apparent in the moving video. It would be good to see it in person to see if this others you. Basically half the under table area will go dark sometimes at some angles. Ideally these pavilion mains would turn on (reflect light) or off (reflect dark) in an alternating or random pattern not in clusters like this.

I like it! I agree with dreamer that there might be minor obstruction issues, but the petals don't all go dark at once, which is one of my requirements for an OEC.

Thank you for pointing it out. I see it now. It's not something my untrained eye was noticing. I'm going to accept it and move forward with setting. I really appreciate your input.
