DANG! Worked so hard to not copy a designer and VC beat me

So i have mentioned a bit here and there in SMTB that I have a new piece in the works- i purchased a rose cut ring from sincityfinds on etsy but wanted to make a new setting, with inspiration from many of the beautiful octagon settings i have been seeing around. Though this type of setting typically looks more antique I wanted to modernize it a bit.

I LITERALLY made my first set of CAD revisions last night...and then I saw on Victors IG that he just came out with a hand forged version

As a huge fan of his work and an IG follower of VC, I wanted him to know that i was NOT trying to make a poor imitation of his piece and it was just a coincidence that my ring looked like his so I made a wisecracking post telling him to get out of my head, lol. I have been trying so hard to come up with my own unique twists on designs and to say I am a bit bummed is an understatement(Especially as mine is CAD and his is, beautifully, hand made)

Anyways- because my ring is a rose cut, I am having the bottom of the ring closed up in high polish white gold, but putting little cut outs around to provide for cleaning. I love the look of foil back diamonds but HATE that dust gets trapped inside so to me this was a win- win.

Changes to the CAD i sent to my bench:

1) Taper the shank (which i may switch to a reverse taper now, lol)

2) Make inner bezel a bit thinner

3) Slightly scallop the halo (again, since this is what VC did I may just leave mine straight now)

4) three diamonds per station not two

We were playing with ways to make the side diamonds "match" the melee without having to custom cut something. I came up with a few creative solutions that my jeweler is trying out...if you guys have any suggestion feel free to pass along!

Well, don't feel bad. It seems that octagonal settings are popular right now. There are true antiques and many current reproductions. As you know, Caysie has made a few different ones. I think since yours is not completed, it is good for you to show that you had the idea of the sidestones in the halo before Victor posted his. I am not seeing that his halo is scalloped, though, or else I don't know what you mean.

I think it is brilliant to make a solid bottom (with side openings for cleaning) so you won't see through to your finger!

Victor actually responded to my IG post saying to not feel bad hahahah! Yes, I really just wanted him to know that I was not trying to copy him and i am glad he realizes that. I am a huge fan of his (and others!) hard work on unique designs- it just happened that we were thinking the same thing at the same time.

DS, I LOVE all of Caysie's designs (i know you have seen me swooning in other threads). I was trying to come up with something that was a more modern take on the octagon, and looked/ tried on many in person to get a feel for what i wanted.Victors halo has a very gentle scallop- i think its hard to see in this pic, but the sides go in just the tiniest bit to make it more fluid. I really like this effect as the hard lines felt a bit more geometric, but i think i may stick to "straight" edges now. I'm still playing around with the CAD to get exactly what i want, but I have to say I am happiest with how my closed back/ open sides is coming out. Will post pics when its finished over in SMTB

It's very pretty dolly...I like the low profile you've got going and I think the tapered shank will give it a more feminine curve.

Victor's ring is gorgeous as usual! The picture is not up close enough to see if his has the lines in between the sections and
your bezel is not completely rounded (unless this happens when he makes it thinner) like Victors.

You cant exactly help it if you've got the same design going and someone else gets it out before you're done...

Thank you so much Tyty, means a lot coming from your discerning eye They aren't exact , just very very similar in terms of aesthetic, stone placement, etc.

i just felt wracked even though it was not purposeful... ah well. I'm still excited for my new ring!
