I got the setting from DiamondsRight.com. Went to the jeweler to have it set, and the damn thing is the wrong size. ERRRRGGGG! The jeweler also made feel very uncomfortable about getting the stone set. He said it might get chipped, and because this isn''t my stone I can not accept responsiblity, and to be frank I cannot afford the time to get it repaired if this happens.

1) Can I get the stone insured before I have it set?
2) Should I contact the guy who sold me the stone and ask him to have it set?

What do you guys think? This has been sooooo stressful. I give up I am going to propose with the shell ring I got her. LOL.

Getting a loose diamond insured is usually not possible. I think Chubb Insurance might do it, but there was some stipulation I think. Something about it having to be a Blue Nile diamond.

I would never let someone set my diamond who was not willing to take full financial responsibility for the diamond. Get it in writing. I would definetly get the person who sold the diamond to you to set it, if at all possible.

Under the right circumstances, Jewelers Mutual will do it. It mostly has to do with the jewler having a JM commercial policy in addition to your presonal policy on the stone. Ask them at www.jewelersmutual.com

I agree, find a jeweler who will take responsibility for their work. They''re out there. By all means, start with the dealer who sold the diamond.

The vendor who sold you the diamond has much more of a financial incentive to set it, as he has received the profit from your sale into his cashflow.

Anyone else is just making a small amount of money to set your stone. Not much financial incentive there, especially regarding the responsibility they incur.

The selling vendor is the best way to go in my opinion.

Ditto.

Hi Hansel,

I am sorry to hear of this frustration! Did I see correctly that the ring setting is the wrong size for the diamond? Is there anyway that you can go back to Diamonds right ... and have them "make it right" for your diamond?

I think I would ask them to do this first, and then talk about setting the diamond in it.

Let us know what happens.

They sent me a 6.5 and on the order form it showed that I ordered a 6. The head for the diamond actually fit pretty nicely. I am sure they will send me the setting that I ordered, but with my time limit (I already purchased the tickets for the 15th of Feb) all this nonsense makes me nervous. I wrote the dealer, hopefully he can help. Thanks for all your advice.

Ok. Rochelle, who gave me the impression that she was the manager at DiamondRight.com, said not to worry everything would be taken care of. But Sue, who I am sure is a nice person, said something (and this could be the physicist in me talking here) which was 100% stupid. She said that because I ordered a setting alone they sent me a stock size...Ok, here is where I think it gets stupid...and stock size only come in 7. So even though I ordered a 6 and it says "6" on the invoice, they sent me a stock size. Does that make any sense to you? Oh, and I measured the ring with calipers they are 16.88mm in diameter, hence they are in fact a 6.5 not a 6 as I ordered. I think I could just be stressing out because I am proposing in 15 days...

That is absolute nonesense!

I would feel cautious about working with a jeweler who made such a stupid mistake. What is their return policy? You don''t have time to to deal with this! Could your local jeweler resize the ring? Ugh, I''m so sorry to hear about all your troubles with this ring.

Is it possible to start over and get your setting elsewhere?
