My newly mounted diamond on a gorgeous platinum ring fell onto concrete surface by accident, and I''ve counted 2 scratches and two deep dents on the platinum ring. I''m very annoyed since I want to present this ring this Friday. Is this typical for platinum and can this be fixed in short period of time??? I would appreciate any suggestions.

i believe you can bring it to the jewelers and get it buffed. platinum is a soft metal, so i''ve heard that if it gets scratched, you shouldn''t lose any metal like you would if you were to bang up white gold. Supposedly you can get platinum buffed and smoothed over and over again and you''ll have the same amount of platinum as you had to begin with. good luck!

Ditto, take it to be polished and hopefully most of the dents and scratches should come out. Platinum is a dense, but soft metal. Scratches and dents are very common and develop after a short amount of time. Fortunately, these can usually be buffed out.

Yup!!!

You should have no problem getting it buffed/polished in a very short amount of time (as in leave thet ring for an hour and let them get to it then pick it up.). My first set that I had for 6 years was buffed and polished OVER and OVER and almost every ding was able to be buffed out. Even the few that remained were very minimized once buffed. I am VERY hard on my jewlery...."Bull in a china cabinet" as my husband calls me. I like that platinum can take the frequent buffings and not lose any metal.

Thanks guys, this has been helpful, and much of a relief. I was feeling pretty bad about getting 4 dents and scratches from an accidental drop onto concrete when showing my friends this ring, but it sounds like this is not unusual for platinum and easiy fixed. That's great!. I'll see if I can post pics of this e-ring. I have to teach myself to do this first.

OK, here is a cell phone shot of my diamond shooting off some sparkles from background sunlight (not direct) and no lightbulbs. It's kind of blurry, but I can't do too much with the cell phone.

Here is the story,

I took it into the jeweler from whom I bought the ring, and they fixed the dents and scratches within 1 hour to brand new condition! The ring had a hole in it and they were able to add melted platinum into it. Free of charge too. I used Toppers Jewelers in Burlingame, CA. I called other places on Sunday after it happened to see if I could fix it then, since Toppers is closed on Sunday, and they said it would take 5 days or that they cannot do it. What a relief.

Glad to hear things worked out!
Beautiful ring!
