I´ve spent the last few weeks online learning about diamonds and rings, in preparation for popping the question
emlove.gif

I want to get her a ring that I´ve poured some blod and sweat into, and that reflects me and us, and that she would love and want to wear for the next 50 years.
Tall order, I know

Having that in mind, I´ve focused on the more "odd" shapes, and right now I´m thinking about a Pear, Heart or Oval shape, perhaps a Cushion, flanked by a pair of ruby hearts. One concern is that the ring will have to much going on, and that I should remember that less is more, but a bigger concern is how to choose a perfect cut in an "odd" shape diamond?
I havn´t found anything like ideal or h&a cuts in the "odd" shape world, so how do I make sure?

Another concern is the bow-tie effect, and how much you notice it in everyday use ?

HI Newice!

IMO there's no such a thing as a "perfect cut"- it's really about what you love.
Make sure you get good photos- and video if possible to make sure you love the shape, and the sparkle.

I like heart shapes as side stones.
We've made such rings with cushion, Radiant, round, and pear- to me, all can look lovely!

Hi nib, are you looking locally or online, first?

Mainly online.
My problem is, that I´m trying to keep the proposal a secret, so I can´t just pick her up and drag her to the jewelers

And I don´t trust her girlfriends to keep their mouths shut, so I´m lurking online, and quickly slamming the lid of the laptop, when I hear her comming.

Hope she dosn´t think I´m having an affair

Ok, if you want to make this as painless as possible, I would do this:

1. Decide what you want. I personally agree that less is more. You need to decide which way to go with the center stone, and, if you want sides, what will those be. Budget is most likely going to play a part in this. Also, without asking her, do you have any idea what she likes? Fancy cuts are lovely, but many don''t love them, or at least all of them. Some are sparklier than others. So I would think about what you think she might like best.

2. I would get 2-3 combos of what you might like, and then make a poll if you''d like lots of opinions from the gals. We love those.

Or, if you aren''t sure what to even consider, we can help you round those up first in here.

3. Once you know what you want, contact a vendor that can help you find what you need. Goodoldgold is one who deals with different fancies, and provides tons of info, pics and videos. That is crucial when buying fancies online. Letting the vendor find you the stones is a lot easier than trying to learn everything and doing it on your own!

Thanks

She has commented on friends rings, so I know some of the things she dosn´t like (big milky chunks) so quality over quantity, and she dosn´t like massive rings, or rings towering to high, but she does like multiple stones. And I know she wants a ring, she can wear every day. Not one she´s affraid of loosing, that would be sitting in a safe most of the time.
I know she likes rubies, blue sapphires and diamonds off course

. Also she would like something different from what most of her friends has, and nothing square. Thats why I´ve zeroed in on the ovals and pears. The heart shape is cute, but I´m beginning to think it wont remain cute for ever and ever. I think I would rather give her a heart diamond as a pendant or as a pair of earrings ?

I´ve been looking at pics here on PS and I think a center stone about 1.4-1.6ct would fit her slender fingers, combined with a number of smaller stones for added flash and fire.

I havn´t set a firm budget, but I´m not falling for the "2 month salary DeBeers thing"

(is it before or after taxes by the way?) Initially I was thinking something like 10k for the stone and 2½k for the setting
But thats just from browsing on BlueNile and ExcelDiamonds, the budget isn´t set in stone, if the right stone pops up

Good thinking, I was going to mention that very sentiment.

I would save that for down the road.

lol I have no idea on before or after taxes. Your budget sounds great, I think you should be able to put something very nice together.

Have you looked through this thread yet? It has just about everything you could imagine in the way of a ring. I often find it helps to look through here to get ideas, or rule them out. Lots of ovals and pears in there, see what you think.

And you're welcome!

I´m working my way through the picture threads, and they are a great help. Especially the onfinger shots are really helpfull in judging size.

Boy, I´m beginning to understand why you girls love them diamonds

there are some really beautifull rings outthere, I´m just glad I only have to foot the bill for one of those things

You sound like a gem! No hearts...they get old fast. The Pear, cushion or Oval all sound nice!

This might be something she likes if she wants simple/classic (but the colored side stones would add a twist)!
Its an oval with pear sides. Very lovely...belongs to littlemissbliss. 2 carat middle with .7ish sides.
