Some of you may recall I found an unusual Octagon asscher a couple of months ago but the ASET came back negative so I didn't purchase it. I love to seek out different looking stones and am a step-cut nut.

I found this little beauty hiding on JA under the radiant cut diamonds. It is not a Radiant. They put it in the wrong catagory. I think it's the bomb :cheeky:

I was originally looking for a pendant stone but think if this pans out it could be the center in a three stone ring. It's too cool not to stare at and I would miss it on my neck. The pendant would have to wait until next year.

So is it a cool & unusual cut or not? Would do you think?

Here's the thread I started yesterday:https://www.pricescope.com/community/threads/ec-on-hold-for-pendant-stone-can-i-get-some-feedback-please.186987/

Hoping some of the step cut aficionados can give me feedback. Woukld it be difficult to find another stone with this cut?

Admittedly I don't know anything about step cuts, but that's awesome that you found such an interesting cut in the wrong section! Hopefully someone else will pipe in and let you know if it's a winner or not!

Woofmama,
The shape is definitely unique and I love it but I don't like the cut quality. I gave my reasons in the original thread.

I think it's a beautiful shape and has nice potential. There is obstruction, but you are going to get that with a lot of step cuts-- it just depends on the degree. If it looks like a bowtie, pass, if it just looks like patterning and flashes only rarely, keep. I think an ASET would be my next step.

Thank you very much for your replies. I will request an ASET on this and post it. If this one doesn't pan out, how difficult would it be to have a PS vendor source one just like this? I know Jon at GOG has an asscher cutter he pulls stones from regularly. Are certain cutters known for this style? I wonder if this cut is that unique. I really love it and pulled up a PS google search on here last night. Most of the threads were from 2005-2007 and discussed the difference between the steps and corners on a diamond with this GIA classification versus emerald cut.
So needle in the haystack or fairly common? If I could get one sourced I would gladly drop to an H-I-J color and go up in size.
Thoughts?

Lets cross that bridge when you get to it.

this looks more like an emerald cut than it resembles a typical radiant. would be interesting to see facet plotting but too bad it isn't available in dossier reports.

Just to clarify for the newer members and lurkers. It's a step cut. It in no way resembles a radiant. It's not even a modified step cut like a tycoon. It's just got very big corners and the shape is more octagonal than the 'classic' EC shape. The faceting plot on it will be just like any other step cut.

Radiants are brilliant cuts. Very different. Branded radiants, and generic ones.

I would be curious to see the diamond under the ASET scope

ASET IS HERE!
Gemoligist comments:The 0.71 carat-D-VVS2 (diamond 156448) has very good light performance that is well balanced through the diamond. The fluorescence of the diamond is not causing it to appear hazy, or have any negative effects. It is facing up a beautiful white color and is completely eye clean. Thoughts? Are there more questions I need to clarify with the gemoligist?

Does anyone know about red versus green? This one has far more green than red, so does that mean it does better under indirect lighting?

This is one that really needs to be seen in person.
The windmills are green but what you cant tell is how green ie which part of the zone they draw from.
If they are close to red it could be just fine if they are drawing light from the lower green zone it is going to be darker in that area in overhead lighting but fine where there is some side lighting.
If possible I think it is worth an in person look unset.
I wish a real video under different lighting conditions was available.

Thank you Chrono & Karl for replying. I emailed back two more questions for the gemologist.
1. Does it show a bowtie/dark band across the center?
2.Does it have the customary sparkle that ec's typically exhibit.

Interesting how the gemologist replied for this diamond. She or he touched on a couple the points that were a given, eye clean, great color. They did say it has very good light perfomance. I'm hoping for more info on this. Hope I get a reply tomorrow on my questions.

Should I ask any other questions?

The center should be bright its the windmills that are questionable.
I would ask strait out how the brightness of the windmills compare to the rest of the stone.

Woofmama, did I miss the follow-up/decision to this? What ended up happening here, the stone is sold on JA so wondering if that was you?

I did receive the diamond last Thursday but was underwhelmed. It's very small and really doesn't light up like my ering stone or the stones in my band. It shoots off a few pin flash type of sparkles here and there but the steps don't show up IRL. With-in an hour of getting the delivery I called for a return label.I'm going to quit looking for another step cut for now. I really want a beautiful stone for the center in a three stone ring so I'm going to wait at least a year and see what Jon at GOG can source for me. Here's a pic next to my band for size comparison.

I have had a budget of 2k to spend and originally was looking for a bracelet. DS found one on ebay for me which I ordered but didn't love IRL and sent back. DH wants to pick a bracelet in person because he loves bracelets so asked me to wait to go shopping together.
I was also considering a pendant but haven't settled on a style. Hope to see a kite set asscher at Dimend Scassi next month. Yummy!

Then I found this on ebay and purchased it. I am a huge Marilyn Monroe fan and had always wanted a band like hers from Joe DiMaggio. So this came in a bit under my budget and looking at comps I feel I got a great deal. It arrives Wednesday. I'll do a SMTB thread if I like it.

Bummer about the JA stone, but you should really hold out for the perfect step cut that sings to you!

That band looks awesome! I hope you love it IRL too!

I think that band is GORGEOUS and would love to have one like that!!! :appl: :appl: :appl:

Woofmama, the cut was very unique and I was sorry to read you didn't like the diamond. Your band is gorgeous. :appl:

Bee I love my EC thats in my ering, It's very lively & bright. I realized when I saw this stone there is no way I would choose a stone smaller than the one I have which is 1.11ct. Like you, I like lower colors, my current diamond is a K. Even though I have been searching for a center diamond for a three stone ring I'm going to hold out for a minimum of a carat or larger :naughty:
I really would like to find an asscher for that project. That will be a RHR for me.

DS & Marcy-I love the band as well  I hope it doesn't disappoint in person. It's a 2ct band descriped as having G color and VS quality stones. It's a 3/4 eternity. The setting is 14k WG which I don't mind. When I looked at comps on Dimend Scassi the same carat wght in 18k was $3.3k. Facets had a 3.41ct for over $6k. Since this was under $2k I couldn't resist buying it. I hope it isn't a disappointment. We shall see! If I love it there will be a thread in SMTB on Wednesday.

I also hope I'm not overdoing it with the step cuts. Aside from my MRB studs everything I've purchased in the last year is step cut. Perhaps It's time to look at other cuts :loopy: But I want an asscher! Whenever I consider other shapes I just keep going back to them.

Sorry to pester, but did it arrive? Do you love it, or was it a dud? I LOVE this style of ring and it's definitely on my short list after a diamond pendant. I wish we saw more of these on PS, but then again, that might drive the price up.

Hi Ponder-Yes I received the band. I love it! It looks fabulous with my ering. I took a few pictures and will do a SMTB thread tonight or tomorrow morning.

You mean we will have to wait?
:nono:

Your new band looks super pretty and I can't wait to see the hand shots.

I can't wait to see it.

I'm glad to see the thread pop back up but am sorry the new EC isn't the showstopper you were hoping for. I guess too much green isn't a good thing in this case.
