customs/duty charges ??

How can I figure out the charges to send a jewelry item from the UK to the US? I want to order something from ebay, but I am nervous about the duty.

Hi Sizzle, I had a quick look at the Customs site but all I could find was an article on duty for trade, not consumers..

I know this is probably not much help, but I''ve found the quickest and most accurate info by just phoning your local Customs Office and asking - they should be relatively easy to look up.

Wow, Who knew so much went into this! It''s all so confusing. Wouldn''t you think it would be clear cut and searchable. Like I shoudl be able to type in "platinum diamond solitaire" and the value and then a fee come up. Thats how I would do it!

Looks like an unset diamond (7102) is max duty of 10%.

But...

this can''t be right! (Looks like general rate of 6.5%, free in some states and 80% in others! Yikes! But I do not recognise the abbreviations, there are not all US territories are they - what is MX, JO etc?)
