I''ve read on this board that the modern cushions shine more than the antique ones. Are all cushion brilliants modern? If not, how can I tell if the one I''m considering is modern? Thanks!

Hi, DLG! Well, I think you would need more info before being able to tell that. If it is called a "Cushion Brilliant" by the GIA, then it could very well be a modern cushion...or not...there don''t seem to be any hard and fast rules from what I can tell.

Your eyes would have to be the best judge, plain and simple. Or, better yet, the eyes of an appraiser. That being said, just being cut more recently doesn''t neccessarily ensure better light performance. A modern cushion could still be a dog. Again, nothing will tell you this as accurately as seeing it.

Do you have a specific stone in mind? If so, do you have any other information? Depth, table, and culet information could *help* decide whether it could be modern, but again, no promises.

Have you checked out this thread on different types of cushions? As you can see, some stones called "Cushion Brilliant" are very different from one another, and one looks more antique.

Hope this helps at all! Please feel free to post more info!

Hi Fatafelice. Thanks so much for the response! I checked out that thread...the diamond I saw looks most like number Maya''s stone and like number 2. But number two is a cushion modified brilliant not a cushion brilliant. These are the specs-

GIA
2.06 carat
cushion brilliant
8.11x7.72x4.52
depth 58.5%
table 56%
girdle- slightly thick to thick
polish vg
sym g
cutlet none
h/vs2

Do you think it is modern? Good light performance?

Well, as I said, GIA doesn''t really seem to have any solid rules. And Maya''s cushion is also just called a "cushion brilliant" on the cert, so I''d say you have something similar if that is what it looks like to you. I cannot tell you much about light performance without seeing the stone, but if you have seen it and think it looks great, then that is all you need. Just be sure to try and look at it in different kinds of ligthing other than "jewelry store" lighting that is meant to make anything look brilliant!

I would say that it seems a *touch* shallow, but that is just my taste...and again there are few rules with cushions other than letting your own eyes be the judge. They will rarely be as brilliant as an ideal round, but there are definitely some great performers out there. Moremoremore''s and Maya''s cushions would be great examples of that.

Good Luck! It sounds like a really nice stone! And if you get it, you had better post pictures!
