I need your thoughts on a cushion cut halo setting with a round diamond.

Would I be better to go with a Cushion cut diamond?

The setting is a 14K white gold cushion halo setting. My local jeweler started showing me round diamonds and looked at me like I was crazy when I asked if we should have a cushion cut diamond with this setting. Thanks for the help!

depends on a) the look you are going for and b) if that specific mounting was designed for a round (a cushion can be elongated and therefore won't work in a round hole)

Is he steering you to put a stone into that exact setting or will he order you a setting to fit the stone you choose?

There are lots of pics of both round and cushion stones in cushion halos - both are beautiful. I'd first decide what shape center you want (there are several varieties of cushions, and rounds for that matter...) and then find a jeweler that will either make or order the setting to fit your specific stone.

There are entire threads on halos over in the Show Me The Bling forum - go take a peek! :)

To get the best execution I would recommend custom.

Either can look great, it's just a matter of preference.

The cushion will fit better in the setting, and will look more uniform in relation to the surrounding melee. This is assuming your stone fits the halo, of course.

The downside is that it's much, much more difficult to find a well-cut cushion in the dimensions you need. Any vendor will have hundreds of well-cut rounds available that will fit, but probably only a few well-cut cushions.
