After reading posts and recommendations for cushions, I am utterly confused. Some say color isn''t important, some say clarity is not all that important, and now I am starting to think that depth and table on a cushion are the most important. Please help...

Also what constitutes an antique cushion look and a modern cushion?

I have a local dealer (Winter Park, Florida outside Orlando) who has presented me with the following diamond:

Cost: $10,000
Type: Square Cushion Cut
Depth: 69.3%
Table: 64%
Crown: 14%
Pavillion: 43%
Girdle: slight thick to thick, faceted
Cutlet: None
Polish: VG
Symmetry: G
Clarity: VS1
Color: H
Fluor: None

I am worried about the depth, symmetry, and color. Sorry no pic! Trying to set in custom setting with micro-pave thin band antique style head.

Thanks for your help.

Did I miss how big this stone is? I think the numbrs look pretty good, the depth may be slightly deep, but.... Did you see it in person? How did it look to you? That's most important. Do you want the crushed Ice look or the chunky facets?

Sorry guess size would help... 1.68 carats. I went and looked at it and it looked great, but I have very limited experience and frankly don''t think I could tell the difference between two diamonds staring at them at the same time. What is the difference between the crushed ice look vs. chunky facets?

Also, any diamond dealers in the Orlando area that are recommended or is the internet the way to go. I guy I am talking to seems very knowledgeable and is going to custom make the setting.

My suggestion - right here at PS, off the main page, there is a good interview with Mark Turnowski that talks about the different cuts of cushions - I recall a cushion brilliant and a modified brilliant? And at Good Old Gold, there are some videos (shot in hi-def no less!) that compare some knock-out cushions and will give you a no-pressure-by-annoying-B&M-salesman tutorial in the difference between the "chunky" look and the "crushed ice" look in cushions.

All of these videos will help you get an idea of what is considered by several PS vendors, to be really good cuts versus just average cuts.

Hope this helps!

Hi neighbor!!

I bet I know who your jewler is

These are the two extremes, an old mine brilliant and a modern or probably modified stone. Once you determine which style you prefer you can begin to narrow down your plot search. Keep in mind that one photo is excellent and the other more amateur. It should give you a good sense of the styles though.

Thanks for the advice you all. I never thought picking a diamond was so tricky... I like a challenge. Perfect stone for a perfect lady.

Do you have any thoughts on the diamond stats posted? Thanks again to you all. This is the best site.

Legacy - where are you located?

The law office I work at is in Winter Park but I live over in Waterford.

This thread has been helpful...I didn''t realize that GOG had sooo many resources...I am going to check out some of their videos!

Legacy - do you happen to have any recommendations for Jewlers in the area? I am working with one and he seems great, but someone else''s view never hurts.

Thanks.

I use a private jeweler in Maitland and I love her for custom work and settings... not so much for cushion cuts. She really doesn''t like them so will try to change your mind about them. Such a sweet lady though. She reccomended someone named Richard in Winter Park but I can''t remember what place he owned. Personally I went with Mark at ERD and I''m very happy with the cushion he got me.

There is someone down on Park Ave she liked too. When I go to pick up my ring I''ll ask her again.

Aren''t those videos just the coolest?? I think I''ve watched most all of them, but I''ve watched several a second or third time. Not only are they informative, they''re just mesmerizing, and I can watch them, learn a lot and not feel like I''m wasting a salesperson''s time OR being pressured to buy.

Hmm....maybe I''ll go look at the ones one cushions again. Better put the drool guard on the keyboard though!

Mmmmmm......sparrrrrkly!!!

Legacy - Are you still around? I am talking with Mark at ERD as I could not find anyone local who really knew cushions. Did you only buy your stone through him or did he make your ring as well. I am a little hesitant to buy the stone without seeing it.

What type of ring did you buy?

I am looking at a cushion brilliant with the following characteristics:

1.08:1 ratio approx.
1.70
F
VS2
VG Polish
VG Symmetry
No Fluor
59% Table
59.4% Symm
Large Cutlet

What are your thoughts?

Also if you don''t mind me asking, how was he on price.

THanks.
