culet---desirable or not

When looking at emerald cuts, is having a small or medium culet a desirable trait? If the answer is no, then why are they there?

A small culet can actually be a desirable thing to have because it helps protect the diamond against chipping in that area...

I'd be careful with a medium culet. A very small or even small culet might be desirable due to what Kirk said, but if the culet is too large you create a yucky hole effect in the center of the diamond.
