I have been looking for awhile now for a good diamond and I have been reading as much as I can on this board to learn about diamonds. Everyone on this board has been a great resource. I came across a diamond that seems to have great stats, but while it is an SI1, it seems that there is a visible crystal in the center. It seems like it affects the idealscope image as well as the photo at 40x magnification. Is this something to be concerned about?

wow, it is right smack in the middle.

Ask the vendor if it is eye clean and discuss and agree upon a definition for eye clean with them.

Agree with Kenny, ask the vendor if it is eyeclean and get confirmation on their idea of eye clean. I have a SI1 with a small crystal near the center, I cant for the life of me see it with my naked eye, but i can see it with a loupe and that makes me very happy as I will always be able to ID my stone.

You have to remember those pictures are magnified and on a big screen. In real life it is hardly so noticable usually - I would confirm it doesnt effect sparkle and see what the return policy is, if the return policy is good and they say it is eye clean and you like the rest of the specks, then get it and look at it yourself
good luck

ditto, no way to tell just from image or plot if it is going to be eye-clean.

Thanks for the suggestions. I will have to see if it is eye clean. In general though, should I be more worried about an inclusion that is in the center of a diamond, or a diamond that is rated SI1 because of just one crystal inclusion in the center?

not necessary, case by case evaluation as with all eye-cleanliness evaluation.

size about .85ct??

Yep, just about .85 carat. Why do you ask?

Because size does matter for visibility of inclusions -- smaller diamond means smaller facets means more distraction from inclusions. Anyways, there is a good chance it is eye clean technically, though if it is eye clean to your standards is anyone''s guess. It will be proced accordingly, that has been my observation and inclusions in SI stones.

Also ask how deep in the stone it is. If it's way down in the culet region, that might be more tolerable than up near the top. The nearer the table, the more it will be seen at a tilt. Might be better to have it at the bottom and only seen when looking straight down rather that up nearer the surface and have it stand out whenever the stone is tilted.

http://www.goodoldgold.com/diamond/6697/ is a diamond that looks like it has a table inclusion that is closer to the surface.

just a thought:

the lower you get (further toward the culet) the more light must reflect through a smaller diamond "space" on fewer/smaller "facets area", so the more the inclusion affects final light return, no? A crystal doesn't have the same effect as a cloud, but I might be wary of having a big cloud inclusion middiamond-culet. Because all the light that's going to be returned has to go through a very small area, so what's in that area matters much more than nearer the table where it's easier for most light rays to "miss" the problem spot.

Well said.
