Hi,

I''ve been reading that people prefer Crown Angles from 34.2 to 34.8 but if I find a diamond that''s my size, color and clarity and the IdealScope image is great (low leakage) but the diamond has a Crown Angle of 35.5 (average) 35.0 to 36.0 with Pav angle of 40.6 (average) 40.4 to 40.8... AGS-0 (new cert)

... how would a Crown Angle between 34.2 to 34.8 effect the diamonds look? Would it look like a better cut diamond?

Just confused...

there is no one crown angle or even ridiculously narrow range of crown angles, such as the example you have given, that is 'best' or has a better look. crown angles work together with pavilion angles and the table and the depth and the facet configuration and the optical symmetry....and ....and ....and.... (you get the picture)...
you have to look at the diamond as a whole. there are different combinations and no one is 'best'.
if you have a new ags0 with light performance grading, you have a diamond that will outperform the majority of stones on the market.

Belle,

Could you possibly give us a link to an AGS cert that has light performance grading? I want to understand what to look for.

Thanks!

Due to the consistent nature of diamond and the fairly consistent way most diamonds are fashioned into finished stones, there is a definite range of crown angle that "works" best. However, this range is rather broad and not the best way to select a diamond although within this range will be important. Many other factors of cut control which narrow portion of this range works best in the many potential combinations.

Crown angles below 30 degrees combined with thinner girdles indicate a lot of potential for chipping during wear. Crown angles greater than 36 degrees probably indicate a diamond that will not perform as well as some with slightly shallower angles, but this is not 100% proof. Steep crown angles, such as those over 36 degrees generally are found on deep stones where the apparent face-up size of the diamond is smaller than others of similar carat weight.

AGS Cert with zero for light performance.

Thanks for the link, Belle. I see where they are listing light performance (just about where polish and symmetry are graded).

Here it is...

Yes, that''s great, esp! Some of the AGS reports (the shorter version?) do not have that, so I haven''t been seeing it much.

ds, some diamonds (for whatever reason) are not graded using a diamond quality document (dqd) that grades light performance, but rather a diamond quality report (dqr) that gives a more generalized picture.

Hey ds,

I'll ditto what Dave said. Also be aware that there are varying appearances of diamonds that do get the AGS ideal classification. Ie. just because a stone receives AGS Ideal for light performance doesn't necessarily mean they all look the same. Excluding GIA Ex stones, amongst the AGS Ideals the face up appearance can vary. To some a minor amount and to others a little more and we've found consumers certainly have their preferences amongst the varying appearances. If you're interested I'll see if I can muster up a few for a mugshot when I get in tomorrow.

Peace,

Hey Rhino,

I''d love to see some mugshots comparing a few stones if you get the chance. You take great photos, and it''s always interesting to hear you describe the difference between the diamonds! Your video demonstrating the diamond dock was really interesting too.

Kate

PS. The diamond we got from you is still getting lots of compliments. It''s currently off to get the head redone on our e-ring since I wasn''t happy with the setting job our original jeweler in Toronto did and the stone was loose in the semi-bezel setting after less than a year. I''m feeling lost without it :) I hope this one will turn out better!
