Why does a 40+ degree crown cause a comment on GIA reports?

Thanks,
FB

For some very strange reason GIA put crown angles on what they considered to be too steep (and too shallow) on reports.
The steep warnings started at 36 degrees - but today GIA accept excellent proportions as far up as 36.5 degrees crown angles.

I think it is strange because they never gave a warning about pavilion angles which would be far more interesting.

Thanks.
The comment was on a cushion-cut stone. Is there anything seriously wrong with the light performance of 40 degree crowns (if the pavilion is cut to match), or is it just hidden weight (similar to the excess weight of a steep pavilion angle)?

Are steep crown angles in a diamond ''bad'' or is it just personal preference?

depends on if the pavilion compliments the crown or not.

I think we agree that it is an out of date usage of terminiology.
I hope GIA will review the usage.
