This might be a stupid question, but if you''re talking about a RB AGS0 diamond, do you need to be concerned about crown/pavillion angles? Or is it just assumed since it''s an AGS0 that they''re good?

The newer ags0 grade is much better than the old for removing those with bad angle combos but there are still a few combos that slip thru that arent as good as some others are they bad enough to be called bad?
That is a very hot debate.

The do a good job of eliminating the steep/steep but some steep/shallow and shallow/shallow ones still pass that have some issues.

Any of the new ags0 graded diamonds will be great diamonds in my opinion some will just be a little better in some light conditions than others.
AGS has done a good job but around here we go far beyond what would be practical for AGS to do when separating out the best of the best.
Or in other words ags for the most part does a good job of separating out the best and we take those and find the best of the best.

I''m still not certain how one can discern which reports show the "newer" AGS0 ratings. The reports published before July 2005 and the ones published after seem the exact same to me. How can one tell?

The new reports have a different look, but the biggest difference as Belle said is that 'Light Performance' is now the prime requirement in the cut grade area.

Here is an example of the old AGS DQD, where Polish, Symmetry and Proportions set the cut grade (I added the rectangle and green arrow):

More elaborate info on the new AGS documents for round and princess cuts found here.

Gotcha John! Thanks very much for clarifying in detail.

And when was the exact switch over? June 1st or July 1st of 2005?

You're welcome of course.

AGS handled it smoothly. There was a period of overlap when the old system was still in place but we could request that our submissions be graded in the new system, if it was our 'druther.

(it was - we'druther have the new ones).

John,

Although the difference between the changes between before & after between the two agencies will probably be thought to be considerable....nevertheless....the comparison seems at least reasonable. Denverappraiser conjectured an expected discount or effect to the "older" documents, in the upcoming case of GIA, and resultant move to have these diamonds re-certified. With respect to your current goods with the older AGS docs, do you see any such pattern, or...because they are in-house with you, perhaps this is more of a non-issue, with your own WF imprimatur extending out with greater effect, minimizing much effect from a particular "cert."

Just curious.

John,

When was this period of overlap? Is it still in effect?
