I was just engaged last week! I absolutely LOVE my ring, but I am a little bit nervous because yesterday I noticed a black line that looks like a crack in the center stone of my ring. The diamond is a radiant cut and just over 1 carat. Unfortunately I don''t know the rest of the specs on it because I didn''t ask my fiance. I told him how pretty I thought the diamond was the day after our engagement (seriously the prettiest diamond I''d seen) and he told me that he looked at it under the magnifier for a long time and couldn''t find any "flaws" in it. He said he even passed over another diamond before this one because he could see a flaw with the magnifier. The ring was custom made.

I''ve been reading online and I understand this could be an inclusion that I''m just now seeing because the ring has gotten dirty. The "crack" is in the corner of the stone seemingly originating from where the prong meets with the diamond and is now very noticeable with the naked eye. I can see it trailing up both sides of the diamond from the point where the prong makes contact with the diamond. Could it be cracked or is this just an inclusion I shouldn''t worry about? Today I can actually see the hairline looking crack from the top of the ring and that corner of the ring seems to be reflecting less light now and appears to be a bit darker. I did try cleaning the ring to see if the visibility of the "crack" would change and it didn''t. Granted, I don''t know how good I cleaned it since I was probably being overly gentle with it.

I showed the crack to my fiance yesterday and he said, "whoa, that wasn''t there before." Then he looked again and thought it might just be a reflection. That being said, we were busy and he was in a hurry. He has discriminating taste and I absolutely love the ring. I don''t want to hurt his feelings, so I don''t really want to bring it up again unless it''s necessary. I would feel like a total jerk expressing concern about nothing more than an inclusion in the diamond. That being said, we haven''t insured the ring yet (I know, we should have done that already, but it''s only been a week) and I''d like to let the jeweler know right away if the ring is actually cracked.

From what I''ve read, I know a crack is rare, but I have 2 very good friends who have had a cracked diamond. One happened while it was being set and the other hit hers just right after having had it a while. I haven''t done anything crazy to have cracked the diamond aside from just wearing the ring and showing it to everyone I know! ;) I even take it off to do the dishes...

Any thoughts or advice?

Hi Okiegirl

First don't panic as it might not be a crack or damage, what is the clarity grade of your diamond, which type of lab report does it have and what inclusions are listed?

It is possible it could be an inclusion that you have only just noticed due to the lighting or the ring needing to be cleaned but really its only speculation on my part, what I would do is get a pro to check it for you to make sure. See if there is anindependant appraiser in your area and get them to inspect the ring for you. Can you feel this mark with a fingernail? Try running a nail over the area to see if it catches.

Can you post a photo of what you are seeing? Does it look anything like the image below? If so thats the girdle reflection and its normal, I don't know if this is what you are seeing ( doesn't sound like it) but its worth checking.
