Hi,

I am based in the UK and have been looking at different diamonds for my fiancee''s ring. Having decided to purchase from the States I was yesterday offered the following stone in the UK. It looks tempting and the price seems right but I wonder if you might be able to help appraise its proportions. The GIA report does not provide all the stats what I do have is the following...

Shape: Round Brilliant
Measurements: 5.03-5.08 x 3.21
Weight: 0.50
Proportions
Depth: 63.5%
Table: 56%
Girdle: Medium, Faceted
Culet: None
Polish: Very Good
Symmetry: Very Good
Clarity: VS1
Colour: G
Fluorescence: None

Any help would be massively appreciated!

All the best,

Giles

The slightly large depth percentage also results in the diamond being slightly smaller in diameter, which means it will appear smaller than other more ideal cut 0.5 carat stones with depths in the 60's and 61's percentages.

I agree. Basically you are paying for some weight that you can't see. A well made 0.50ct should measure about 5.2mm as opposed to 5.06mm of the stone you are considering.

Perhaps the seller has discounted the price properly to account for the "weight you can't see".

If so, and if the diamond is beautiful, it might still be a contender.

Thank you all of you for your thoughts.

Now you point this out to me it makes sense.

I have been offered another stone and wonder whether you might be willing to provide me with your thoughts on this also.

Shape: Round Brilliant
Measurements: 5.15 - 5.19 x 3.14
Weight: 0.5
Proportions
Depth: 60.7%
Table: 58%
Girdle: Thin to medium faceted
Culet: None
Finish
Polish: Excellent
Symmetry: Very Good
Clarity: VVS2
Colour: G
Flouresence: None

I know the Table falls outside the boundaries and wondered how this might affect it.

Many many thanks in advance,

Giles

FYI the diamond comes in at just under $1700
