Hi,
Could a benchman please look at my post dated April 14, 2010 and offer some advice? I''m particularly concerned about the safety of my diamond given that 4 out of the 6 prongs are not touching the top of the diamond. I have expressed my concerns with the jeweler and even emailed them the photos but they deny that anything is wrong with the setting.
I would really like a second opinion.
Thanks in advance!

not a benchman.

Yes, that setting has issues that need to be addressed, and soon. They should not be complicated matters. Either make it clear to your jeweller that you expect safety and aesthetics, neither of which they have thus far sufficiently provided, or find a new jeweller. Simple.

I do a fair bit of benchwork, so I''ll just make a short comment. Everything that you want fixed, should be fixed. They are all simple fixes which should take their bench guy less than an hour to rework. The biggest thing that should be reworked are those prongs. Not being pressed down on the stones is sure to cause snagging on hair, sweaters and other fibrous objects. Catching on something strong could cause a prong to lift or break and so this should be fixed pronto, (this is a five minute fix, so no reason not to do it). The rest of this is cosmetic, but if you aren''t happy, then it should be reworked to your specs without question.

A quality shop will always offer to rework anything that you aren''t happy with, so I''m surprised to hear that you''re having a problem. If they think there is nothing wrong after looking at the e-mailed pictures, then they need to put on their glasses and look again. I''d walk into the shop and discuss this with whoever the top dog is. You may have approached the wrong person about this and they don''t understand "customer satisfaction" as a prerequisite to repeat business. Give them a chance, in person, to rework it the way you''d like it. That will probably work, but if that doesn''t work, then remember that these things can be reworked to your satisfaction by any competent bench person at very low costs, should the maker refuse to do it.
