I am just about to purchase a diamond from www.superbcert.com. While they give report and photos of the diamond is it worth getting these checked out by Consumers Gem lab? It will cost me $125 to do such, however, is it worth this for a peice of mind of should I just take there word for it?

Thanks.

Hi Ed,

If you feel comfortable with the purchase and they give you adequate paperwork for appraisal purposes without an inflated value then you will be fine. If it is a loose stone you will eventually need to have an appraisal done as a finished piece. Most internet consumers like the piece of mind of having another verification, not from the seller. Thanks for the reply Cindy.

I am a complete idiot when it comes to Diamonds. Literally I know Zero (maybe a bit less!). Like every other specialist field - it literally is a minefield for those of us who only buy one diamond in a lifetime.

We are - to some extent - blinded by science. Brilliant scope and I2see reports. Hearts & Arrows and ImageScope photos, etc. I am looking at buying a diamond from Superbcert but am worried about such things as cut dimensions. Somewhere I read that while a stone can be within the parameters of AGS spec 0, the table could be at one end of the spectrum while the depth at the other end effectively making a badly proportioned AGS 0 diamond. Also, someone commented on the diamond I was purchasing; saying the H&A photo looking like folded Paper Aeroplanes. They exhibited a line down the middle of the hearts.

Would you mind taking a look please? Many thanks....

Ed., I just bought a diamond from Superbcert and we did have it checked out by an independent appraiser before we bought it. I don't think that you need to worry about it matching the paperwork, but only you know if you will have peace of mind without another opinion before buying. I would buy from Barry again without an independent appraisal ahead of time because I trust him.

I'm also curious about the hearts on the SC diamonds looking like they've been "folded." I don't have my hearts and arrows picture yet from Barry but I did make a (poor quality) copy off the website before I bought it. Mine hearts do also have the "folded" look about them. The diamond is gorgeous though.

In a sense, you are already paying for the assurance of getting a superior diamond when you decide to buy a brand. If you trust the brand, why throw money away on an appraisal? If you don't trust the brand, why not save the premium and buy unbranded?

Cindy, New England Gem Lab, already gave one reason.

Check out this thread for several other reasons.
