Hi all, my fiance and I have found a diamond that is stunning to the naked eye (even under the loop, almost no visible inclusions) - but are very concerned about the depth and very thick - extremely thick girdle it possesses. (jeweler is asking $8600) Here is the GIA report:

https://myapps.gia.edu/ReportCheckPortal/getReportData.do?&reportno=2151160267&weight=1.61

I know it's difficult to judge based on numbers alone. But everything I read says to stay away from 70%+ and this is a rather large jump. Thanks in advance for your thoughts.

It is 6.87 average sides, which is about average for this kind of cushion's weight. I expect around 7 mm for 2 cts.

thanks Julie - so not a deal breaker? i'm not sure i understand how the depth affects the diamond (aside from so much of the weight being on the bottom) or what the downsides are...

Most cushions are cut for weight retention, it is very rare to find a generic fancy without thick girdles. As long as it looks good, and they can set it, I wouldn't worry about it.

When considering depth, I also look at table measurements.
A 56% table means a higher crown- which could be responsible for the depth.
In some cases on Cushion Modified Brilliant diamonds, you give up a little size, but the high crown may produce some lovely optics.

This is not an "endorsement" of the diamond- as it's not possible for anyone who has not seen the diamond first hand to make relevant comments to that particular diamond- rather general comments.
