*Please think about a 90 degree prism(or NailHead diamond), hemisphere light with head. Could anybody publish here before Tuesday Why WLR will give incorrect result for such condition?

---------------------------------------------------------

Didn't see this until now (5am, editor notes not finished!), but...

Assuming 90 degree prism and no observer’s shadow…

Even though total light return towards any position on the hemisphere (no viewer taken into account) is high, a viewer from any given position will only get little of it at any given time. So the “total outgoing light” (WLR) fails the reality check.

The shape of the prism (four sides) makes it impossible for light reflected from two different spots (spot = projection of visual reception area onto prism) to reach the observer at once.

A dynamic light return measure (weighted average of visible light return from different positions of the prism) would seem deceptively better in this case. Any additive metric of such observations would overstate the actual visual effect. Considering an oscillatory movement (cosine square weights were mentioned), the model of the prism introduces a lag between two visually brilliant positions of the prism. Unless the oscillations are unrealistically rapid, they could not induce a visual impression of continuous (or compounded) light return. So contrast is apparent given movement, not total outgoing light.

This is mostly immediate intuition.

The observation above becomes less relevant if the prism modeled is modified to approach a conic surface and the lag between visible bright reflections decreases.

i'm lost. the link has 8 pages of posts? are we supposed to read that to figure the question?

the title says it's a difficult simple question. it would be a less difficult quetion if you stated it, not attached a link to 8 pages.

so what is the quesiton?

the lines in italics in my post are 'it' - the Q is cited in one of Garry's posts on the 7th page of that link
