How do you guys judge diamonds online (once you decide which price, carat, and ratings)?
For example if i do a search on james allen for 1.2+ carat, G, VS1, and Ideal I can find these two diamonds
http://www.jamesallen.com/diamonds/G-VS1-Ideal-Cut-Round-Diamond-1248695.asp
http://www.jamesallen.com/diamonds/G-VS1-Ideal-Cut-Round-Diamond-1263679.asp
In my opinion the second one is better for the money (however smaller)

Compare them first without the light map and photo

Using https://www.pricescope.com/cutadviser.asp i can type in their dimensions and get
a better score with the second (excellents vs very goods)

Then if you look at the flaws - I am unsure of which ones have worse flaws.
I noticed that each certificate has a different key. Does that mean that the dimensions photo is supposed to have all the markings? Sometimes I only see 1 of the types but not another on the drawings.
On these 2 diamonds which one would you guys think has worse imperfections?

Then compare them with the photos
Can you guys actually see the flaws in the photo (with their little loupe tool) that are in the certificate?
I can''t see it.
The second photo looks great with the dark pattern in the center.

Now if you look at the "performance light map" (Only on the first one) it looks there is tons of brightness but the contrast pattern is not the same as https://www.pricescope.com/idealscope_indx.asp Does that mean that its just not as bright as it could be if the pattern is there? From the cut adviser it showed very good instead of excellent so I assume this is a bad light map (comparatively). Is that correct?

Why do some certificates have the light map and others not? Was it when they were purchasing the certificate?

Is there anything else you guys see when comparing these diamonds?
(Obviously one is 1.25 and one is 1.2 carat for similar price)

Thanks for the help guys

Making the links clickable, then will look.

How do you guys judge diamonds online (once you decide which price, carat, and ratings)? The angles and proportions help narrow it down pretty swiftly, then it becomes a matter of looking at actual photos, Idealscope and ASET images to see the details.

I noticed that each certificate has a different key. Does that mean that the dimensions photo is supposed to have all the markings? Sometimes I only see 1 of the types but not another on the drawings. If an inclusion is listed, it is on the diagram. The colored inks do not scan well, however, so do not always show up on the digital images of the certificates.
On these 2 diamonds which one would you guys think has worse imperfections? I am not liking the proportions or photo of the first, so that imperfection overrules anything about the inclusions.

Then compare them with the photos
Can you guys actually see the flaws in the photo (with their little loupe tool) that are in the certificate? Sometimes, not always. Different lighting and the photo set up can make it hard to see inclusions. When you are looking at VS clarity stones, it is very hard. The inclusions were difficult for a trained grader to see live.
I can't see it.

From the cut adviser it showed very good instead of excellent so I assume this is a bad light map (comparatively). Is that correct? The light map is computer generated from a scan of the stone and isn't always 100% accurate. An actual ASET or Idealscope image is preferred for judging cut quality.

Why do some certificates have the light map and others not? Was it when they were purchasing the certificate? There are different types of reports available from AGS. Only the Platinum has the light map and is both proportion and light performance based. The Gold reports are proportion based only and do not have the light map.

Is there anything else you guys see when comparing these diamonds? Despite the AGS 0 rating on the first stone, I am not liking the proportions or the leakage that seems visible in the photo. I would want to see an Idealscope image on the diamond to confirm what is in the photo. From everything posted, I prefer the second one, but would want to see an IS image for it, as well.

Number 2 stone for me.

Number 1 stone is bad, you can even see the leakage from the loupe image.

The first diamond is showing leakage even though it is an AGS0 cut grade, it has steep deep angles, I would pass on that one.

Diamond 2 has potential, you could ask for an Idealscope image for this one.

I think this is the first time I have seen an AGS0 that is not a goodie!
