Hi there,

Just a quick question, we have bought a very white looking F coloured diamond, and are planning on getting a platinum setting - will it still look as white once set? More white? (although I don''t see how that is possible).

I was looking at a friend''s new e-ring today and she said it was D colour, also platinum set, but I''m sure my diamond looks a lot whiter (obviously cut and shape come into play here but I was surprised as I expected a D colour would be as white as an F)

A well-cut F will will blindingly white no matter what you mount it in.

The visual difference between D and F is difficult to ascertain without a set of jewelers grading stones.

It'd be really difficult to judge that your unmounted F was "a lot whiter" than your friend's mounted D... To make a fair judgement, you'd have to have your stone in the same lighting that your friends diamond was in at the time, as lighting & the color of a room have a lot to do with how "white" a diamond appears to the eye. This is assuming she has a correctly graded D stone.

Interesting question for the experts tho - can an ideal cut GIA/AGS F look noticably *whiter* than an average cut GIA/AGS D, all else (lighting, etc) being equal?

Most likely it is not the body color of the diamond that made the difference between the D-grade ring stone and yours. Most likely the cut, lighting conditions... the prevailing color reflected by the stone or, your knowing that was supposed to be "whiter" given the paper trail

Sttings do affect (a little) the way light gets to the stone, but cannot color your white stone.

Out of curiousity, what are the two diamond shapes? Is one fancy, one round? If fancy, what shape?

You know, I have a D stone that I watched a jeweler take out of an old mounting and I swear that looking through the pavilion my diamond appeared whiter/brighter AFTER it was taken out of the setting so maybe the setting does make a difference. Possibly your stone will look not exactly less white, but won't have that sharp white tone that you see now.

Oh, also, were you comparing in indoor lighting or outside? Outside, I can't really tell the difference (face up) between my D and my G stone, but inside the difference is obvious.
