Hello,
I just wanted to ask a question re colour (Im Australian hence spelling of colour hehe). Anyway - my current diamond is a 0.83 princess "G" colour SI2 clarity.

Im looking at a new diamond which is also a princess which is 3.02 carat - "I" colour and same clarity.

Im wondering has anyone upgraded their diamond but gone "down" in colour and if you feel this affected the diamond? I realise this a very broad question. I also wanted to know do people consider a certain "don't go beyond a certain colour" depending on shape of diamond. i.e princess done go beyond an "H" in colour.

Hope this makes sense.

Thank you

it depends on your personal preference. All i can say is that at a 3 carat sized stone with I color, you would see a yellow tinge. Can you live with that?

I've gone from F to I for the additional ct. Yes there is a difference to me. No matter how white the I faces up, it's never icy white like the F. And I think I is about the lowest I can go... for now... who knows how I'd react when presented with a 4 ct J at the right $

The colour totally depends on you! Choose whatever you like.

What lab graded the diamonds? Have you seen and compared them to one another in person?

I agree with Dreamer, the lab grading the stones color can make a big difference. Especially if one lab graded your current stone and another graded the potential upgrade stone. Body color becomes more evident as the weight increases. I also think that it's much easier to see color in stones with points, or corners such as a princess, marquis or pear. How you set the stone can make a difference as well, for instance, if you are bezeling, or haloing the diamond, then much of the pavilion view (the side view of the stone where body color is most easily detected) is at least partially covered, so you will see the stone predominately from it's face up, and whitest position. Also how well cut the diamond is will impact how much body color you will see as well. A well cut stone with great light performance can help mask some color, likewise a poorly cut stone can exaggerate lower color.

I think that you need to compare your stone with some lower color stones (in the ct size you hope to upgrade to) and see if the presence of color bothers you.

I probably would go no lower than H in a princess because I do think you'll see tint in an I. But that's just me. I won't go below I in a round because the tint is apparent to me.
